Product Description
I think mosaic knitting is the easiest color work technique since you only work one color per row, no carrying yarns across. The scarf is completely reversible, looks the same on both sides but with a color variation. You can knit the scarf in any size; the pattern is easy to change. Instructions for a long fringed scarf and a buttoned neck warmer are included. The pattern calls for bulky #5 yarn (not super bulky) but could also be made with worsted weight yarn. Reversible Mosaic Knit Scarf by Judith Stalus
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a reversible scarf using mosaic knitting techniques. The design is versatile in sizing, allowing crafters to make either a small ascot-style scarf or a full-size scarf depending on their preferences. Both versions feature reversible construction, making the scarf attractive and finished on both sides.
Mosaic Knitting Technique
The scarf employs mosaic knitting, a two-color knitting method that eliminates the need to carry yarns behind your work. This technique is considered one of the easiest approaches to two-color knitting because you work with only one color per row at a time. The mosaic method creates an intricate patterned appearance while maintaining simplicity in execution, making it ideal for intermediate-level knitters.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches adapted for the mosaic technique. By strategically slipping stitches and working with alternating colors row by row, the mosaic method builds complex visual patterns without the complexity of traditional colorwork. This approach ensures both sides of the scarf are equally beautiful and reversible.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The pattern calls for two 7 oz. skeins of Lion Brand Madrid yarn in two different colorways. The yarn weight is chunky (5 weight), which creates a substantial, cozy scarf. Yardage requirements vary by finished size:
- Ascot-style scarf: approximately 350 yards total
- Full-size scarf: approximately 700 yards total
Any bulky weight yarn can be substituted for the specified Lion Brand Madrid.
Tools Required
The pattern requires a Size 10½ circular needle measuring at least 16 inches long. For the full-size scarf version, a longer circular needle is recommended, though the pattern is not worked in the round. The circular needle format provides flexibility and comfort when working with chunky yarn across the scarf width.
Design Variations
Crafters have flexibility in customizing their finished scarf. The pattern accommodates different sizing preferences—width and length can be adjusted to suit individual taste. Additionally, while the pattern photos showcase versions made with two different colorways of multi-color yarn, the same mosaic technique works beautifully when created with two solid colors for enhanced contrast and visual impact.
