Renate Mittens by Tanja Osswald
What is Being Made
Renate Mittens are a pair of crocheted mittens featuring a distinctive maritime-themed design. The mittens showcase decorative ammonite spirals winding around each thumb, inspired by a love of the sea. These are sized mittens measuring approximately 19 cm (7.5 inches) in length and 5.5 cm (2.25 inches) in width when unstretched, though they will stretch slightly wider and become a little shorter with wear.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
These mittens are constructed using slip stitches as the primary crochet technique. The defining design feature involves two short row spirals that create the ammonite pattern around the thumbs. This advanced technique requires careful manipulation of short rows to build the spiral structure while maintaining the overall mitten shape. The use of back loop only slip stitches contributes to the fabric's distinctive texture and stretchiness, which is an important characteristic of the finished mittens.
Stitches Used
- Slip stitches (worked through back loop only)
- Short row spirals for ammonite thumb detail
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Renate Mittens pattern calls for DK weight yarn. The sample shown in the pattern uses Nature's Luxury Giverny yarn in two colorways: Dahlia's Nightfall and Vergißmeinnicht, with 30 grams allocated for each color. The mittens pictured used 25 grams total per mitten (9 grams for the ammonite spiral and 15 grams for the remainder of the mitten), though it is advisable to have a few extra grams on hand.
A 4 mm crochet hook (US size G) is required for this project. Additional materials include a darning needle for seaming and sewing in ends, and optional stitch markers to help track progress through the pattern.
Gauge and Difficulty
The gauge for these mittens is approximately 22 stitches in 10 cm (4 inches) when using back loop only slip stitches. Due to the inherent stretchiness of the slip stitch pattern, height gauge is difficult to determine precisely. This is an advanced difficulty pattern, suitable for experienced crocheters comfortable with short row techniques and spiral construction.
