Prickle is a moebius cowl designed for Malabrigo March, and worked from the equator outwards, in one piece, using the Moebius Cast-On made famous by Cat Bordhi. (Detailed directions for the Moebius Cast-On are not included in the pattern, but links to online resources are provided.)
The cowl is knit in a reversible lace pattern known as Porcupine Stitch, hence the name of the pattern: the proper collective noun for a group of porcupines is a "prickle"--"a prickle of porcupines." The pattern also includes fun porcupine facts :)
The cowl is finished with a sideways edging knitted onto the live stitches to bind them off. Two options are provided: a plain garter-stitch edging (shown in white Noro Silk Garden, 2 skeins, and Red Mahogany Malabrigo, 1 skein) and a reversible garter stitch-based lace edging (shown in Fucsia Malabrigo, 1 skein, and lavender Berroco Ultra Alpaca, 1 skein).

Project Overview
Prickle is a downloadable knitting pattern for a cowl designed by Huan-Hua Chye. Originally conceived as the Solstice Cowl and created on the summer solstice of June 21, 2007, this design was renamed to reflect its distinctive stitch pattern and spiraling construction. The name "Prickle" references the collective noun for a group of porcupines or hedgehogs, drawing inspiration from the charming wildlife terminology and the spiky appearance of the lace motifs that spiral throughout the cowl.
Stitch Pattern and Techniques
The primary stitch pattern used in Prickle is an adaptation of the Porcupine Stitch, sourced from Barbara Walker's A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns (page 282). This lace-based stitch creates the characteristic spiky texture that gives the cowl its name, with motifs that resemble porcupine paws arranged in continuous spiraling rounds. The pattern combines traditional lace techniques with structured shaping to create a cowl that sits elegantly around the neck.
Yarn and Materials
Prickle is designed for aran weight yarn. The prototype was knitted in Malabrigo Merino Worsted, a soft merino blend that provides a luxurious drape despite the spiky lace pattern. The contrast between the delicate, spiky stitch definition and the soft, kitteny feel of the yarn creates an appealing visual and tactile experience.

Construction Method
