Product Description

This design came about following a wonderful “special” birthday cruise to the beautiful Norwegian fjords with one of my closest friends. The last destination was the beautiful town of Bergen, where I found a fabulous yarn store with a lovely chatty young lady who was only to happy to assist in my purchases. The blues in the yarn I’ve chosen remind me of the glorious blues of the Norwegian seas and the stunning clarity and beauty of the country itself, as well as the charm of its inhabitants – hence why I’ve called the pattern Norwegian Pearl.

Although I’ve used a sock weight, this pattern can translate into any weight you like – you would just need to amend the number of repeats in order to get the length and depth of shawl you require.

Norwegian Pearl Knitted Shawl by MrsBKnits

Design Overview

Norwegian Pearl is a beginner-friendly knitted shawl pattern inspired by a cruise through the Norwegian fjords, specifically the charming town of Bergen. The design captures the stunning blues of Norwegian seas through its colorwork and construction. This downloadable PDF pattern is free and suitable for knitters new to shawl construction.

What Is Being Made

A triangular or crescent-shaped shawl featuring lace edging and a garter stitch body. The shawl is designed to be versatile in size and can be customized by adjusting the number of pattern repeats to achieve your desired length and depth. The finished piece showcases beautiful blue tones reminiscent of Norwegian waters and coastal scenery.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Lace knitting – Decorative openwork edging created through yarn overs and decreases
  • Garter stitch – The main body construction using knit stitches on every row for a textured, reversible fabric
  • Marker placement – Strategic use of stitch markers to separate pattern sections and maintain shawl structure
  • Repeat pattern work – An 8-row repeat that forms the foundation of the design
  • Customizable sizing – Pattern repeats can be increased or decreased to modify final dimensions

Stitches Featured

  • Knit stitch
  • Yarn overs (for lace edging)
  • Decreases (paired with yarn overs for lace pattern)
  • Garter stitch (knit every row)

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern is worked in Sandnes Garn Tynn Merinoull, a 100% merino wool sock weight yarn produced in Sandnes, Norway. This yarn weight is classified as 4-ply, offering excellent stitch definition for both the lace edging and garter stitch body. The pattern is adaptable to other yarn weights – simply adjust the number of repeats to achieve your desired finished dimensions.

Needles: 4mm knitting needles are required for the specified yarn weight.

Pattern Structure

The Norwegian Pearl follows an 8-row repeat pattern that creates the foundation of the design. The pattern is organized with lace edging positioned on one side of a stitch marker, while the main body features garter stitch construction. This structured approach makes it accessible for beginner knitters while producing an elegant, finished shawl.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner pattern, Norwegian Pearl is an excellent introduction to shawl knitting. The combination of straightforward garter stitch with basic lace techniques makes this design approachable for knitters building their skills, while the finished result delivers sophisticated, wearable elegance.
