Mother of Dragons Mittens by OneHandKnits
What is Being Made
The Mother of Dragons is a pair of knitted mittens designed as a downloadable PDF pattern by OneHandKnits. This project creates fitted hand coverings using intermediate-level knitting techniques, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction methods.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project that employs both flat and dimensional shaping techniques. The pattern demonstrates advanced mittens construction, incorporating strategic increases and decreases to create a custom-fitted garment. The design includes options for different cuff styles, allowing crafters to choose between a traditional cast-on approach or a short-row cuff technique for enhanced fit and comfort.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Mother of Dragons mittens utilize a comprehensive range of knitting stitches and techniques:
- Fundamental stitches: Knit (k), purl (p), and yarnover (yo) stitches form the foundation of the pattern
- Decrease techniques: Slip, slip, knit (ssk) for left-leaning decreases and knit two together (k2tog) for right-leaning decreases, with vertical decreases (DD) that slip two stitches and knit them together through the back loop for a polished appearance
- Increase methods: Right-lifted increases (RLI) and left-lifted increases (LLI) that pick up the leg of stitches below to create seamless shaping, plus make stitches (M) created by picking up the bar between stitches
- Construction elements: Cast-on (CO) and bind-off (BO) techniques, slip stitches (sl) worked as if to purl, and through-the-back-loop (tbl) variations for refined stitch definition
- Shaping features: Short-row cuff construction for custom fit and marker placement (pm) to track pattern sections
Yarn and Materials
The Mother of Dragons mittens are worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and durability for a frequently-worn accessory. The pattern calls for 2mm needles for the right glove, which creates a dense, warm fabric appropriate for mittens. The specific yardage and fiber content recommendations are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is designed for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable reading pattern abbreviations and following multi-row instructions. The combination of lifted increases, vertical decreases, and short-row shaping techniques makes this an excellent project for developing advanced shaping skills while creating a practical, wearable garment.
