Moda Fabrics Stiletto Nine Patch Heart Mini Quilt – Pattern Summary
This downloadable PDF pattern from Moda Fabrics guides quilters through creating a charming Nine Patch Heart Mini Quilt measuring approximately 17" x 14.5". Designed at an intermediate difficulty level, this project is a wonderful way to use a single charm pack while practicing classic patchwork techniques in a compact, decorative format. The finished mini quilt makes a lovely wall hanging, tabletop accent, or heartfelt handmade gift.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a small quilted wall hanging or display piece featuring eight Nine Patch Heart blocks set on point — meaning the blocks are rotated 45 degrees and arranged diagonally across the quilt top. Each block is constructed from 1.5" squares arranged in a classic nine-patch grid, using three different coordinating prints per block to create a heart motif through careful color placement. The setting triangles and corner pieces fill in the edges to complete the rectangular layout.
Fabric and Materials Required
- 1 Charm Pack – Stiletto by Moda Fabrics (SKU 30610PP), from which nine or more 5" squares are selected and cut down into 1.5" squares
- 1/3 yard background fabric – Moda Grunge (SKU 30150 165), used for setting squares, side triangles, and corner triangles
- 1/4 yard or one fat quarter of binding fabric – Stiletto (SKU 30617 20)
- 1 fat quarter of backing fabric
- Batting sized to fit the finished mini quilt top (approximately 17" x 14.5")
- Basic quilting supplies including rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilting ruler
Cutting Instructions Overview
- From the charm pack, select at least nine 5" squares and cut each into nine 1.5" squares, yielding a total of 72 squares for the nine-patch blocks
- From the background fabric, cut one 3.5" x WOF strip and one 5.5" x WOF strip, then trim the overall piece to 17" x 14.5"
- Subcut the 3.5" strip into twelve 3.5" squares for alternate setting squares
- Subcut the 5.5" strip into one 3.5" square, four 5.5" squares, and one 3" square
- Cut all four 5.5" squares on both diagonals (an X cut) to yield side setting triangles — 14 triangles are needed
- Cut the 3" square once on the diagonal to create the two small corner triangles
Techniques Used
- Nine-patch block construction – A foundational quilting technique where nine equal squares are sewn together in a 3x3 grid; here, the arrangement of prints within each block creates the illusion of a heart shape
- On-point setting – Blocks are rotated 45 degrees and set diagonally, requiring the addition of side setting triangles and corner triangles to square up the quilt top edges
- Diagonal cutting for setting triangles – Squares are cut on both diagonals to produce quarter-square triangles (for the sides) and half-square triangles (for the corners), ensuring the straight grain of the fabric falls along the outer edges of the quilt
- Scant 1/4" seam allowance – A slightly narrower than standard seam allowance used throughout to ensure accurate block sizing after pressing
- Pressing seams open – The default pressing method called for in this pattern, which reduces bulk and helps blocks lie flat; seams are pressed to one side and nested when joining rows
- Row assembly with nested seams – Rows are pressed in alternating directions so seam intersections lock together neat
