Product Description
This loop cowl is knit in the round in a tube. This cowl begins with a provisional cast on and uses Kitchener Stitch to join for a smooth, invisible finish. The floats are hidden inside so no need to catch them. The line art cowl was inspired by my “Line art socks” design. Both of these designs futures simple and graphic lines that give you the freedom to play with colors and at the same time keep the structural look. Line art cowl is the perfect way to use up your leftover yarn and showcase it. You can knit your cowl as long as you like, and use up a lot of scrap yarn.
Line Art Cowl by Renate Dziedataja
Project Overview
The Line Art Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting project designed to create a sophisticated loop cowl using colorwork techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Renate Dziedataja guides knitters through constructing a seamless tubular cowl that showcases two contrasting colors in a striking line art design.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a loop cowl—a circular neckwear piece knit in the round without seams. The finished cowl features a colorwork pattern that creates bold, artistic line designs across the fabric. The construction method ensures a smooth, invisible join using the Kitchener Stitch technique, resulting in a professional finish suitable for wearing as a statement accessory.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Colorwork knitting: The primary technique involves working with two colors of yarn simultaneously to create the line art pattern
- Circular knitting: The cowl is knit in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming
- Provisional cast on: The pattern begins with a provisional cast on method, allowing for a seamless join later
- Kitchener Stitch: Also known as grafting, this technique joins the cast-on and bind-off edges invisibly for a polished finish
- Float management: Working with two colors in colorwork creates floats (strands of yarn carried across the back), which require proper tension control
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern uses stockinette stitch as the foundation fabric, worked in the round to create smooth, even rows. The colorwork pattern is created through knit stitches in alternating colors, with the specific motif defined by the line art design. Knitters will need to follow a chart or written instructions to determine when to switch between the main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC). The gauge for this project is 26 stitches and 20 rounds over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working the colorwork pattern on US 7 (4.5 mm) needles. However, the pattern notes that gauge is not critical for this project, allowing for flexibility based on personal preference for fabric drape and finished size.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This cowl requires two colors of DK weight yarn, or fingering weight yarn held double for a similar thickness. The sample shown in the pattern uses:
- Main Color (MC): Filcolana "Arwetta Classic," a blend of 80% super wash merino and 20% nylon. One 50-gram skein provides approximately 210 meters of yardage, held double
- Contrasting Color (CC): Maruma Yarns "Sheila Sock," 100% super wash merino. One 100-gram skein provides approximately 365 meters of yardage, held double
- Total yarn requirement: One 100-gram skein of each color
Needles and Additional Notions
Knitters will need two sets of US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles for working magic loop or two-needle techniques in the round. The pattern notes that needle size should be adjusted as needed to achieve desired gauge or fabric characteristics. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking pins or wires for finishing, scrap yarn for the provisional cast on, and a crochet hook (likely for managing the provisional cast on or for finishing details).
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to tackle colorwork and more advanced finishing methods. The Kitchener Stitch and colorwork float management require attention to detail, but the pattern's flexibility regarding gauge makes it forgiving for those still developing their skills.
