Product Description
The Jay hat is designed for serious warmth – worsted weight yarn worked in a double-knit pattern makes a very thick fabric perfect for trapping warm air. The geometric design keeps the two layers of fabric attached and makes the hat fully reversible.
Double-knitting is a technique that creates a fabric two layers thick. You will be working the inner layer and outer layer at the same time out of two different colors. To create fabric which is stockinette on both sides the outer stitch is knit first and then the inner stitch is purled.
All this means you will have twice as many stitches on your needles as normal for a hat of the given size. I recommend working on a 16 inch circular needle although magic loop or double pointed needles could also be used.

What Is Being Made
The Jay Hat is an advanced-level knitted beanie designed for maximum warmth and versatility. This fully reversible hat features a sophisticated double-knit construction that creates two distinct fabric layers simultaneously, allowing crafters to showcase different color combinations on each side. The hat is available in three sizes—small (19"/49 cm circumference), medium (21"/56 cm circumference), and large (24"/63 cm circumference)—making it adaptable for various head sizes.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Jay Hat employs double-knitting as its primary construction technique, a method that creates two complete layers of fabric in a single pass. This advanced technique requires knitters to work with two colors simultaneously, switching between them to form both the inner and outer layers while keeping them structurally connected. The geometric design elements serve a functional purpose beyond aesthetics—they anchor the two layers together, ensuring the hat maintains its reversible quality without separation or shifting. The hat is worked from the brim upward using circular needles, transitioning to double-pointed needles for the crown shaping.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the Jay Hat is double-knit stockinette, which creates smooth, polished fabric on both sides of the garment. This stitch pattern is particularly effective for double-knitting because it produces even tension and a professional finish. The geometric design incorporated into the colorwork maintains the structural integrity of the reversible construction while adding visual interest to both the exterior and interior of the hat.
Yarn and Materials
The Jay Hat is designed using Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, a 100% wool yarn in worsted weight. The pattern calls for two colors: Pampas Heather as the main color (MC) and Bittersweet Heather as the contrasting color (CC). Yardage requirements vary by size: the small and medium sizes each require 1 skein of the main color and 1 skein of the contrasting color, while the large size needs 2 skeins of each color. Each skein provides 110 yards from a 50-gram ball.
The recommended needle size is US 8/5 mm circular needles in a 16-inch length, with matching double-pointed needles (dpns) for working the crown decreases. Additional notions include a cable needle or spare dpn for cable work if needed, a stitch marker for tracking the end of round, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Construction Details
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14.5 stitches and 21 rows per 4-inch (10 cm) square when working double-knit stockinette. Achieving proper gauge is essential for this project, as it ensures the hat fits correctly and the double-knit fabric reaches its intended thickness and warmth properties. Knitters should obtain the correct gauge before beginning the main hat construction, adjusting needle size if necessary.
Why This Hat Provides Exceptional Warmth
The Jay Hat is engineered specifically for serious cold-weather protection. The combination of double-knit construction and worsted-weight yarn creates an exceptionally thick, dense fabric that traps warm air effectively. Unlike single-layer hats, the double-knit structure provides insulation on both sides of the head simultaneously, while the worsted-weight yarn adds substantial bulk and thermal properties. This makes the Jay Hat an ideal choice for winter conditions requiring maximum protection.
