Ivory 4ply Family Beanie by Jennifer Lee
What is Being Made
The Ivory 4ply Family Beanie is a versatile knitted hat designed to fit the entire family, from toddlers aged 2-5 through to adult men. This downloadable knitting pattern includes five different sizes with head circumferences ranging from 52cm (20½ inches) for the smallest size up to 59cm (23 inches) for men. The beanie features an optional pom pom for added visual interest and warmth.
Pattern Design and Construction
This beginner-friendly design showcases a beautiful combination of striping and fair isle patterning that emerges naturally from the yarn itself, requiring minimal effort from the knitter. The pattern is structured in two main sections: the brim is worked in a classic 2x2 rib stitch for elasticity and a neat finish, while the main body is created using easy stocking stitch. The striping and fair isle effects develop organically as you work, allowing knitters of all skill levels to create a sophisticated-looking finished garment without complex color work techniques.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Ivory beanie employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners:
- 2x2 Rib Stitch: Used for the brim, this technique alternates knit and purl stitches in a two-stitch repeat, creating an elastic, fitted edge that hugs the head comfortably
- Stocking Stitch: The primary stitch used for the main body, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic stockinette fabric
- Decreasing: Shaping techniques are employed to form the crown of the beanie
The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations and instructions for sewing up the finished pieces using a wool needle.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ivory beanie is designed to be economical and accessible. Only one 100g ball of Monte Bianco Sock Yarn is required, which provides 400 meters of yardage—enough to knit at least two complete beanies depending on individual knitting tension and yarn characteristics. The 4ply yarn weight creates a lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for layering or mild weather wear.
Needles: A pair of 3.25mm knitting needles (UK size 10, US size 3-4) are required for this project.
Tension: The pattern specifies a tension of 28 stitches and 36 rows over 10cm (4 inches) when working stocking stitch with 3.25mm needles. Achieving correct tension is important for obtaining the correct finished head circumference.
Difficulty Level
Rated as easy and beginner-friendly, the Ivory beanie is an excellent introduction to hat knitting. The straightforward combination of rib and stocking stitch stitches, along with the self-patterning yarn that eliminates the need for complex colorwork, makes this an accessible project for knitters developing their foundational skills.
