Product Description

The green turtle is a large sea turtle with a range that extends throughout seas around the world. Green turtles are the oceans’ lawnmowers and by eating the tips of the blades of seagrass, they keep the grass healthy. Therefore, don’t forget to knit the sea grass as well, so your turtle won’t go hungry!

This green turtle measures 15 cm from head to tail. It’s a fun, fast and easy to medium project, knitted on 2.25 mm double pointed needles (UK 13, US 1) in Scheepjes Riverwashed (951) Amazone, Rowan Felted Tweed (184) celadon and Scheepjes Merino Soft (602) Raphaël. It asks for knitting flat, in the round and i-cord, intarsia color work and short rows, forward and backward knitting and some embroidering. The sea grass is an easy knit, done with Scheepjes Riverwashed (954) Congo.

In Hawaii the green turtle is called ‘honu’ and symbolizes good luck and longevity. So, needles crossed, this green sea turtle’ll bring you luck, too!

Green Turtle and Sea Grass Knitted Toy

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern from AnimalKnitdom features a knitted toy green turtle (Chelonia mydas) accompanied by complementary sea grass. The design captures the majesty of these ocean creatures, which can grow from just 5 cm at birth to impressive lengths of 1.5 meters as adults, weighing over 300 kg. The pattern includes educational elements about green sea turtles' ecological role and cultural significance, making it an engaging project for intermediate knitters interested in creating meaningful handmade toys.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a three-dimensional knitted green sea turtle toy along with sea grass elements. The turtle features the characteristic carapace (dorsal exoskeleton) that these marine reptiles are known for, capturing the distinctive anatomy of Chelonia mydas. The accompanying sea grass component reflects the turtles' natural diet and behavior as ocean grazers, often called "the ocean's lawnmowers" for their role in maintaining healthy seagrass beds. In Hawaiian culture, where the green turtle is called 'honu', this creature symbolizes good luck and longevity, adding cultural significance to the finished toy.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The construction utilizes double pointed needles, which are essential for working in the round to create the three-dimensional turtle form. While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern materials section, the technique of knitting in the round allows for seamless shaping of the turtle's body and shell structure. The varied yarn weights used throughout the project enable dimensional variation between the turtle body, carapace, and sea grass elements.

Materials Required

  • Needles: 2.25 mm double pointed needles for the primary construction
  • Yarn: Varied yarn weights are employed throughout the pattern to create visual interest and structural variation between different components of the design

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is designed for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle more complex three-dimensional toy construction. The use of double pointed needles and varied yarn weights requires familiarity with tension control and working in the round, making it an ideal next-step project for advancing knitters.
