This top-down, flared cowl was inspired by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s famous (and fabulous) collar, worn when she dissents from a Supreme Court decision. The upper section is a simple polka dot linen stitch, followed by a band of puff stitches. The lower section is separated into linen stitch in the back with the “bejeweled” bib in the front, adorned with front post stitches and more puffs.

Dissent Cowl by Carissa Browning
What is Being Made
The Dissent Cowl is a top-down, flared crochet cowl inspired by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's iconic dissent collar. This garment features a structured neckpiece that widens dramatically from the top to the bottom, creating an elegant, statement-making accessory. The cowl measures 9.5 inches in height with a top circumference of 26 inches and a bottom circumference of 36 inches, making it a substantial and visually striking piece.
Construction and Design Details
The Dissent Cowl employs a thoughtful sectional construction that combines multiple stitch patterns to achieve its distinctive silhouette and decorative effect:
- Upper Section: A simple polka dot linen stitch creates the foundational pattern for the top portion of the cowl
- Middle Band: A band of puff stitches adds textural interest and visual dimension between the upper and lower sections
- Lower Section: The lower portion is divided into two distinct areas—polka dot linen stitch in the back and a "bejeweled" bib in the front
- Flare Shaping: Strategic increases are worked into the bib portion throughout the pattern, causing the "jewels" to enlarge progressively as you work downward, which creates the cowl's dramatic flared shape
Stitches Used
This intermediate-level crochet pattern utilizes three primary stitch techniques:
- Linen Stitch: Used in both the upper section and back lower section to create a polka dot texture
- Puff Stitches: Featured in the middle band for added texture and visual appeal
- Increases: Strategically placed within the bejeweled bib section to shape the flare and enlarge the jewel motifs
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Dissent Cowl is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn using a US 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook. The pattern calls for two coordinating yarn colors:
- Color A (Dark): 240 yards of dark, solid or semi-solid DK weight yarn for the primary structure
- Color B (Light): 130 yards of light, possibly variegated DK weight yarn for contrast and the bejeweled bib details
- Total Yardage: 370 yards of DK weight yarn
The pattern is shown worked in Moon Tower Dye Works yarns: Enceladus DK (100% merino; 250 yards per 115 grams) in Forested (A) and Topography (B). The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 22 rounds over 4 inches in linen stitch after blocking.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple stitch patterns, color changes, and strategic shaping techniques.
