Product Description
Dartanian is the name after one of the Musketeers from the classic tales, and just like them, this toque is all for one and one for all! A DK weight Crochet hat with a texture pattern that can go with any style of yarn, from solids to the wildest colour ways you can imagine. This hat was inspired by my Dad who loved his toques to have a particular fit, not to tight but not crazy loose, so I ventured to make this hat for him and others who liked their hats that way too. It won’t strangle you head nor fall off without you noticing. This hat is a joy to make and quick! Enjoy!

What Is Being Made
The Dartanian Toque is a beginner-friendly crochet hat designed by Kraken Maid. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a classic toque-style hat suitable for various head sizes through its structured construction method. The hat is worked in the round from the crown downward, building from a small center point to a wider brim.
Yarn and Materials Required
This project requires 280 yards of DK weight yarn. The pattern is designed to work with either a 3.5 mm crochet hook or 3.25 mm crochet hook, giving crafters flexibility based on personal tension and preference. A tapestry needle is needed for finishing and weaving in ends. The pattern notes indicate that swatching is not included, though the gauge information is provided for reference.
Gauge
The recommended gauge is 2 by 2 inches square in 11 stitches across and 6 stitches down. Checking gauge before beginning is important for achieving the correct finished hat size, particularly when substituting yarn brands or weights.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
The Dartanian Toque employs several fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters:
- Double Crochet (DC) — The primary stitch used throughout most of the pattern, providing structure and drape to the hat
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) — Creates textured ribbing by working around the post of the previous row's stitches from the front
- Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC) — Works around the post from the back to create alternating texture and visual interest
- Slip Stitch (SL ST) — Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between rows
- Chain Stitch (CH) — Used at the beginning of rows and to create the foundation
Pattern Structure
The pattern is organized in rows worked in the round, beginning with a small magic ring or chain foundation. The construction increases stitches systematically through the first several rows to establish the crown and upper portion of the hat. Increases are achieved through 2 DC in each stitch techniques and strategic placement of double stitches within single stitches. Post stitches (FPDC and BPDC) are introduced early to create a ribbed texture that provides elasticity and visual definition.
The pattern notes emphasize reading all instructions before beginning and indicate that the chain 3 does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern. This is important for maintaining accurate stitch counts and understanding the construction method.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Dartanian Toque uses basic crochet stitches and straightforward increases. The repetitive nature of the pattern, with instructions repeated for easy reading in bold text, makes it accessible to newer crocheters while still producing a polished, textured finished hat.
