Daffi Baby Pullover by Karin Burkart
What is Being Made
The Daffi Baby Pullover is a beginner-friendly knitted sweater designed for infants and toddlers. This cosy pullover is available in four size options: 1/3 months, 6/9 months, 12/18 months, and 2 years. The design is intentionally simple yet comfortable, making it an ideal project for knitters new to garment construction. The pullover can be customized with multiple color combinations or worked in a single plain color, offering creative flexibility for personalization.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Daffi Baby Pullover employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The pattern utilizes a yarn over needle stitch that is worked through the back loop to eliminate unwanted holes in the fabric, creating a clean, polished appearance. The cast-off method specified in this pattern is an elastic cast-off technique, which maintains the flexibility and comfort of the finished garment. This elastic cast-off is worked while maintaining the rib pattern structure, knitting or purling stitches as they appear, then slipping them back to the left needle and knitting two stitches together through the back loop in sequence.
Stitches Used
- Yarn over needle stitch — worked through the back loop to prevent holes
- Rib stitch — used for structure and elasticity throughout the garment
- Knit stitch — foundational stitch for the main fabric
- Purl stitch — used in combination with knit stitches for rib pattern detail
- Elastic cast-off — specialized finishing technique for flexible edges
Materials and Gauge
This pattern is worked with DK weight yarn in five colors. The yarn quantities vary by size: Colours A, B, and C each require 10 grams for the smallest size, increasing to 15 grams for the 6/9 months size, and 20 grams for both the 12/18 months and 2 years sizes. Colour D is used in larger quantities at 80 grams for the two smallest sizes and 100 grams for the two largest sizes. White yarn is required at 10 grams for each size option.
The pattern calls for both double-pointed needles and circular needles, each available in sizes 3 mm and 4 mm. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches by 28 rows when working with the 4 mm needles. All pattern instructions are written in US knitting terms, making it accessible to knitters familiar with American stitch abbreviations and terminology. The fast completion time and beginner difficulty level make this an excellent introductory garment project for developing fundamental knitting skills.
