Christmas The Snowman Knitted Doll

What Is Being Made

This is a beginner-friendly knitted snowman doll designed by Andrew Lucas, standing 24 centimeters tall. The project creates a charming holiday decoration or toy featuring a classic snowman construction with distinct body segments, legs, and a head, all worked in soft knitted fabric.

Craft and Primary Technique

The snowman is created using knitting as the primary construction method. This is an ideal beginner project that teaches fundamental knitting skills while producing an adorable finished doll. The pattern guides crafters through creating three-dimensional forms by increasing and decreasing stitches strategically, then stuffing the pieces to create shape and dimension.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (st st) – The main fabric structure, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knitted appearance
  • Garter stitch (gs) – A textured knit stitch used for specific sections
  • Increases (inc) – Worked into every stitch to expand the fabric and create the rounded body shapes
  • Decreases (dec) – Used to shape and taper sections as needed
  • Bind and tie (B and T) – A finishing technique where yarn ends are threaded on a tapestry needle and passed through live stitches, then drawn up and secured to close openings

Materials and Tools

The snowman requires 3.25mm knitting needles and approximately 25 grams of DK weight wool in white for the main body and head construction. Small amounts of double knitting wool in green, orange, and black are used for details such as the carrot nose, coal eyes, and scarf or hat embellishments. A small quantity of polyester stuffing fills the completed pieces to give the doll its three-dimensional form and structure.

Construction Overview

The pattern begins by creating the legs and body as a single unit. Each leg is cast on separately with 6 stitches, increased to 12 stitches in the first row, then worked in stocking stitch for 17 rows. The two legs are then joined and worked together for the main body section. This modular approach makes the pattern accessible for beginners while building confidence with basic shaping techniques.
