Christmas Cloche Hat by Sally Pointer

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern creates a Christmas cloche hat designed by Sally Pointer. The cloche is a vintage-inspired, face-framing hat style that combines festive appeal with practical winter warmth. The pattern is offered with three different brim stitch variations and three embellishment options, allowing knitters to customize their finished hat while working from the same basic pattern foundation.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Christmas cloche employs a specialized finishing technique called fulling, which is performed after the knitting is complete. Fulling is a wet-finishing process that shrinks and densifies the knitted fabric, creating a more structured, felted appearance that helps the cloche hold its distinctive shape. After fulling, the hat is blocked to set the final dimensions and silhouette. This combination of fulling and blocking transforms the basic knitted fabric into a polished, professional-looking garment with excellent drape and structure.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern includes multiple stitch options across its three brim variations, allowing knitters to choose their preferred brim treatment. The pattern features knit holly leaf and berries as a decorative embellishment option, with full photo instructions provided to guide knitters through this detailed colorwork or appliqué element. Written instructions are also provided for alternative trimming suggestions, giving crafters flexibility in personalizing their finished hat.

Materials and Specifications

This pattern calls for pure wool aran weight yarn. The designer used New Lanark aran in the original sample, though any similar aran weight wool is suitable for the project. Aran weight yarn is a medium-heavy yarn that works up quickly, making this an efficient project despite its intermediate difficulty level. The finished measurements are designed to fit an average female head after fulling; the pattern provides guidance for adjusting sizing by adding or subtracting 4 stitches at the cast-on to accommodate smaller or larger head sizes.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle fulling techniques and decorative embellishments. The quick-knit nature of the aran weight yarn makes it an accessible intermediate project despite the specialized finishing steps involved.
