Product Description
Do you have gradient kits sitting in your stash, or have you drooled over them at your local yarn shop? If so, here's the perfect pattern for using them. It's called Chevron Sandbox, because the point is to play with color. I started initially by using the Sweet Georgia Prismatic set, but then I wanted even more colors, so I added a little bit of variegated yarn from Meadowcroft Dyeworks, and then I wanted a bit more yellow, so I pulled some Dragonfly Fibers.... You get the idea. (Hmmm.... I think there's also a little Ella Rae Lace Merino in there, now that I think of it.) You have a lot of freedom with this pattern: It's fun, and you'll have "safe" creativity!
Chevron Sandbox Shawl by Cynthia Spencer
What Is Being Made
The Chevron Sandbox is a large, colorful wrap-style shawl designed by Cynthia Spencer. This knitted shawl features a playful chevron pattern created with multiple yarn colors, making it an ideal project for crafters who want to use up yarn scraps or coordinate mini-skein sets. The shawl is sized to fit as desired according to the knitter's preferences, and decorative bobbles are incorporated at the ends to add both visual interest and functional weight to the finished piece.
Techniques and Construction
The Chevron Sandbox employs a multi-color knitting technique that allows for creative color mixing and experimentation. The shawl is constructed with distinct chevron sections worked in various yarn colors, joined together with a contrasting "frame" color that unifies the design. This frame color appears along the bottom edge, the joining lines between chevron sections, and the top of the shawl. Bobbles are worked into the shawl's ends, serving both decorative and practical purposes by adding weight to help the wrap drape properly.
Stitches and Stitch Details
While the pattern information focuses on the chevron construction method, bobble stitches are a key feature of this design. The bobbles are strategically placed at the shawl's ends to create textural interest and help anchor the wrap when worn.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is exceptionally flexible regarding yarn selection. For the chevron sections, fingering-weight or sock yarn is ideal, and crafters are encouraged to use yarn scraps or coordinate mini-skein sets in multiple colors. The total yardage for the chevron sections ranges from 700 to 1200 yards, depending on the desired shawl size. A contrasting frame color—separate from the multi-color scraps—requires approximately 400 yards, though scrap yarn can be used here as well if desired. The pattern recommends choosing light or bright yarns plus dark yarns to ensure good color contrast throughout the design. Needles in size 6 or 7 are suggested, though crafters should select the needle size that produces their preferred fabric feel, as gauge is not critical to this project's success.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Chevron Sandbox is suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with color changes and managing multiple yarn colors within a single project.
