Carlsbad Cowl by Anne Hanson

Project Overview

Carlsbad is a knitted cowl pattern available in two distinct sizes: petite and tall. Designed by Anne Hanson, this downloadable PDF pattern creates a substantial, cozy neck warmer ideal for cold weather wear. The cowl is engineered to provide warmth and comfort while offering styling versatility, with the deeper sections capable of being pulled up to function as a hood when needed.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a cowl—a tubular neckwear accessory that drapes around the shoulders and neck. The Carlsbad design offers two size options to accommodate different preferences and body proportions. The finished piece creates natural curves and folds that work with the wearer's body to trap warmth effectively near the neck and head area, making it particularly suited for harsh winter conditions and cold morning commutes.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch: The primary fabric structure, which creates a textured, bumpy surface that adds visual interest and depth to the cowl
  • Short Row Shaping: Strategic short rows are incorporated to create the three-dimensional structure, allowing the cowl to form natural curves and folds that enhance both fit and function
  • Cable Panels: Extravagant cabled sections accent the design, adding decorative texture and visual dimension to the piece

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Carlsbad cowl is constructed primarily using reverse stockinette stitch as the base fabric. Cable stitches are featured as accent panels throughout the design, creating visual contrast and textural interest against the reverse stockinette background. The combination of these stitches, along with the short row shaping technique, creates a garment with sophisticated construction despite its beginner-friendly difficulty level.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight category that provides excellent drape and warmth without excessive bulk. The pattern was photographed in Bare Naked Wools Kent Worsted in the color Driftwood.

Suggested Yarn Options:

  • Bare Naked Wools Kent Worsted
  • Bare Naked Wools Confection
  • FIFC Festivus (special edition)
  • Briar Rose Abundance
  • Brooklyn Tweed Shelter
  • Mountain Meadow Wools Laramie
  • Elsa Wool Company Heavy Worsted Weight Cormo
  • Beaverslide McTaggart Tweeds & Heathers
  • Green Mountain Spinnery Weekend Wool
  • Any soft, springy worsted weight yarn that knits to pattern gauge

The pattern emphasizes selecting yarns that are soft and springy in character, which contributes to the squishy, comfortable feel of the finished cowl. All suggested yarns are worsted weight and will produce the intended fabric characteristics and drape when knit to the specified gauge.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft while still incorporating interesting techniques like short row shaping and cable panels. The straightforward construction and clear techniques make it an excellent project for developing foundational knitting skills.
