Bohemian Wrapsody Knit Wrap by Threebagsfulled
What Is Being Made
Bohemian Wrapsody is an original knit design by Threebagsfulled (© 2010 Hilary Designs) that creates a beautiful, airy summer wrap. This wrap is constructed in two matching pieces that are joined together in the middle, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for warm weather wear. The design offers flexibility in construction method, allowing knitters to work both pieces sequentially or simultaneously on separate needles.
Construction Technique
The wrap employs a two-piece construction method where matching panels are knit independently and then joined at the center. This approach provides knitters with options for their workflow: pieces can be completed one at a time for sequential progress, or both pieces can be worked simultaneously using two separate needle sets for faster completion. The joining technique creates a cohesive wrap from these separate components.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
Bohemian Wrapsody utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for creating an open, airy fabric:
- Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric structure
- Purl (p) – the reverse stitch used in combination with knits for texture and pattern
- Yarn over (yo) – creates deliberate openings and lacy elements characteristic of an airy summer wrap
- Purl two together (p2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping
- Purl three together (p3tog) – a double decrease for more pronounced shaping
- Slip one with yarn in front (sl1 wyif) – slips a stitch while maintaining yarn position for seamless edge work
- Pass slipped stitch over (psso) – a decrease technique used in conjunction with slipped stitches
Materials and Yarn Options
Bohemian Wrapsody is designed for 4 ply fingering weight yarn, making it suitable for delicate, breathable summer garments. The pattern provides multiple yarn options to accommodate different fiber preferences:
Option 1: Wolle's Color Changing 4 Ply Fingering Weight Cotton – Requires two matching skeins of 480 yards each (960 yards total) with size 7 circular needles. Needle length recommendations include 24-inch needles as acceptable, 32-inch needles as preferable, and 40-inch needles as longer than ideal.
Option 2: Sublime Soya Cotton – Requires six skeins worked with size 10 circular needles, with 32-inch length being suitable.
General Yarn Requirements: For any alternative fingering weight yarn, approximately 960 yards total yardage is needed. For knitters preferring worsted or aran weight alternatives, approximately 765 yards total is required, with needle sizing adjusted accordingly.
Difficulty Level
Bohemian Wrapsody is classified as an advanced knitting project. The combination of lace techniques (yarn overs and decreases), two-piece construction with joining, and the need for proper tension control with lightweight fingering weight yarn makes this design suitable for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills and familiarity with lace knitting principles.
Needle Requirements
The pattern specifies circular needles as essential equipment. For fingering weight yarn, size 7 circular needles are recommended, with 24-inch, 32-inch, or 40-inch lengths available depending on knitter preference. For alternative yarn weights, needle sizing adjusts to size 10 for heavier fibers. Circular needles provide the necessary length to accommodate the wrap's dimensions while allowing for flexible working methods.
