Berroco Nevelson Knit Sweater
What Is Being Made
The Berroco Nevelson is an intermediate-level knit sweater designed by the Berroco Design Team. This pullover sweater is available in seven sizes, ranging from bust measurements of 36 inches to 60 inches, with finished lengths between 19½ and 23 inches. The design offers a versatile fit suitable for various body types and proportions.
Construction Method
This sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat approach with seamed construction. This method means the knitter begins at the lower edge of the garment and works upward in flat pieces on straight needles, then seams the individual pieces together to create the finished sweater. This traditional construction technique allows for easier adjustments during the knitting process and provides a classic, structured finish.
Techniques and Stitches
The Nevelson sweater incorporates several key knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture:
- Cable stitches: Cable knitting is featured prominently in the design, created with the aid of a cable needle (cn). Cables are formed by crossing groups of stitches over each other, producing the characteristic twisted, rope-like texture that adds dimension and sophistication to the garment.
- Reverse Stockinette stitch: Used for sections of the sweater, this stitch creates a bumpy texture on the front (the reverse side of standard stockinette), providing visual contrast to the cable sections.
- Ribbing: The pattern specifies p2, k1tbl (purl 2, knit 1 through the back loop) ribbing, which creates an elastic, fitted edge that helps the sweater maintain its shape at cuffs, hems, and necklines.
- Charted pattern: The design includes a charted stitch pattern that knitters follow row by row, allowing for precise placement of cables and textured elements throughout the sweater.
Yarn and Materials
The Nevelson sweater is designed to be knit with Berroco Mercado yarn, a chunky to worsted-weight yarn. Yardage requirements range from 5 to 9 hanks (100 grams each) depending on the finished size, with the sample shown knit in size 40" using color #4130 La Costa.
The pattern calls for US size 8 (5.00 mm) and size 9 (5.50 mm) knitting needles, with the larger size used for the main fabric. A 16-inch circular needle in size 8 is specified for ribbed sections. Additional notions include a cable needle for managing cable stitches, and 4 stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping throughout construction.
Gauge and Fit
Accurate gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies three different gauges depending on the stitch being worked: 16 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches in Reverse Stockinette stitch on the larger needles; 26 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches in the charted cable pattern on the larger needles; and 20 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches in p2, k1tbl ribbing on the larger needles. Knitters are advised to swatch and check gauge before beginning the project to ensure the finished sweater meets the intended measurements.
