Beach Umbrella Crochet Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What is Being Made
This is a crochet pattern for a decorative beach umbrella, designed by independent designer Kerri's Crochet. The finished project creates a miniature umbrella suitable for beach-themed décor or as a finished craft piece. The pattern is available in two size options: a larger version measuring 19cm x 23cm (7.5" x 9") and a medium version measuring 13cm x 15cm (5" x 6"), depending on the yarn weight and hook size used.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs fundamental crochet construction techniques to build the umbrella structure. The pattern begins with a magic loop, a popular method for starting projects in the round. The design uses increasing stitches across multiple rows to create the umbrella's expanding canopy shape. The pattern incorporates color changes throughout the construction, utilizing three distinct yarn colors to achieve the beach umbrella's visual design. The pattern includes instructions for fastening off and weaving in ends to finish the piece neatly.
Stitches Used
The Beach Umbrella pattern utilizes a variety of fundamental crochet stitches to create texture and structure:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and turning chains
- Single crochet (sc) – the shortest basic stitch, used for dense sections
- Half double crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch used throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc) – a taller stitch used for height variation
- Treble crochet (tr) – the tallest stitch in this pattern, used to create dramatic increases
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and securing stitches
The combination of these stitches at varying heights creates dimension and helps shape the umbrella's curved canopy.
Materials and Tools
The Beach Umbrella pattern is designed to work with 4 ply crochet cotton for the medium size option, though the pattern also accommodates 8 ply wool for a larger finished project. Three colors of yarn are required to complete the design, allowing crafters to customize the umbrella's appearance with their color choices.
Essential tools include a 1.25mm crochet hook (recommended for 4 ply cotton), though hook size may be adjusted when using alternative yarn weights. Additional materials needed are scissors for cutting yarn and a darning needle for weaving in loose ends after completion.
