Amigurumi Jumbo Sushi Tamago/Egg Pattern by pawpaw
What Is Being Made
This is a jumbo amigurumi sushi tamago (egg) design created as a soft, stuffed toy. The finished piece measures approximately 22cm (8.6 inches) long and 16cm (6.3 inches) tall, making it a substantial decorative or play item. The pattern creates a three-dimensional representation of tamago, the sweet egg preparation commonly found in sushi rolls, using the amigurumi technique of crocheted and stuffed fabric.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. Amigurumi is a Japanese technique for creating small, stuffed crocheted toys and decorative items. The craft involves working in continuous rounds to build three-dimensional forms, which are then stuffed with fiberfill to create plush, huggable finished pieces. This beginner-level pattern makes it accessible to newer crocheters while still producing an impressive jumbo-sized result.
Stitches and Construction Methods
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches suitable for amigurumi construction:
- Single crochet (sc) — the primary stitch used throughout most of the pattern for building the base structure
- 2 single crochet together (2sctog) — used for decreasing stitches to shape the piece and create definition
- Slip stitch (sl st) — used for joining rounds and securing yarn
- Chain (ch) — used for foundation and transitional stitches
- Magic ring — the starting technique for creating seamless circular bases, as seen in the rice component which begins with "8 sc in magic ring"
A key construction note is that all stitches work through back loops only (except for the nori/seaweed component), which creates a distinctive textured appearance and helps define the sushi piece's form. The pattern also notes that eyes and other attachments can be assembled and secured before stuffing begins, allowing for flexible assembly order.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern requires 100% acrylic 8 ply yarn in DK (double knit) weight. The specific yarn used in the original design is Panda 'CARNIVAL 8 ply' in three colors:
- Butterscotch — 127 meters / 139 yards (approximately 100g / 3.5oz)
- White — 97 meters / 106 yards
- Black — 31 meters / 34 yards
A 5mm (H/8) crochet hook is paired with the DK weight yarn to achieve the appropriate gauge and fabric density for the jumbo sushi. Additional materials include a tapestry needle or sewing needle for weaving in ends and attaching components, a stitch marker to track round progression, and polyester fiberfill stuffing to fill the crocheted form and create the three-dimensional toy.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to amigurumi for those new to crochet. Despite the beginner classification, the jumbo finished size creates an impressive and satisfying final product, providing both accessibility and visual impact.
