Clover Brioche Tunic by CamexiaDesigns

What Is Being Made

The Clover Brioche Tunic is a casual, relaxed-fit long sweater designed for intermediate knitters. This top-down garment features a seamless construction worked in the round, offering an adjustable length that ranges from 66cm (26 inches) for extra-small and small sizes to 76cm (30 inches) for extra-large and 2X-large sizes. The tunic's relaxed silhouette makes it suitable for everyday wear, while the sophisticated stitch combination elevates its visual appeal.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Clover Brioche Tunic employs a top-down construction method, which allows knitters to begin at the neckline and work downward toward the hem. This approach provides flexibility for customizing the finished length to suit individual preferences. The garment is worked in the round using circular needles, creating a seamless construction that eliminates the need for seaming pieces together after completion. This technique results in a polished, professional finish with minimal finishing work required.

Stitches Featured

The design showcases a combination of two primary stitches:

  • Garter Stitch: Creates a textured, bumpy fabric with horizontal ridges that add visual interest and structure to the tunic
  • Brioche Stitch: A decorative and dimensional stitch technique that involves knitting stitches together with their yarn overs, creating an elegant, reversible fabric with a distinctive appearance

The brioche stitch abbreviation used in this pattern is Brk1 (brioche stitch knit 1), which describes the action of knitting a stitch together with its yarn over to create the brioche effect.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Clover Brioche Tunic requires worsted or Aran weight yarn in two colors. The yardage needed is:

  • Yarn A (Main Color): 450–600 yards. The designer used Green Sublime Luxurious Tweed Aran for the primary color
  • Yarn B (Contrast Color): 450–600 yards in a contrasting shade, such as grey, to create the brioche pattern definition

Needles and Notions

Knitters will need 4–5mm circular needles (US size 6–8) with a maximum length of 50cm for working the neck and sleeves. The pattern accommodates different needle preferences by allowing knitters to use either shorter circular needles or the magic loop method for longer needles, both techniques suitable for working small circumferences in the round. The pattern also requires 8 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping throughout construction.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 32 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in the stitch pattern used. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements. The tunic is available in multiple sizes with corresponding bust measurements detailed in the included sizing chart, ensuring a proper fit across a range of body types.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch techniques like brioche knitting and garment shaping worked in the round.
