Product Description

The bolero is made in one piece on a circular needle to the armhole, then divided so fronts and then back are knit separately.

Border is integral to the main body. The sewing involved is on the shoulders, the sleeve seams, attaching the sleeves to the body and the border to the back of the neck. The fastening ties & edging are very simple crochet.

You will need between 3 & 6 100g skeins of Willow Knits worsted weight silk yarn for the project. This is between 600 to 1200m. We have added a yarn alternative - please swatch first to make sure your sizing will be correct. The finished bolero is designed to be not too-tight or too-short and would complement any outfit.

Bolero with Lace Detail by Willow Knits

What is Being Made

This is a short-sleeved bolero, a cropped open-front cardigan-style garment designed to sit at the bust and provide a flattering layering piece. The bolero features decorative lace detailing throughout the design, adding elegance and visual interest to the finished piece. The pattern is available in six sizes ranging from Small (to fit bust 32-34 inches) through 3X (to fit bust 52-54 inches), making it accessible for a wide range of body types.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project uses a combination of knitting and crochet techniques to create a polished finished garment. The main body is constructed using knitting needles, while crochet finishing work adds refined edges and details. The bolero is worked in pieces—front panels, back panel, and sleeves—which are then assembled together. The lace detail is incorporated directly into the knit fabric, requiring knitters to work decreases and yarn overs to create the open, decorative stitch patterns characteristic of lace knitting.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout the bolero is stocking stitch (stockinette stitch), which creates a smooth, classic fabric base. This foundational stitch is combined with lace stitches that incorporate yarn overs and decreases to form the decorative lace detail. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including knit (K), purl (P), increases (inc), decreases (dec), and yarn overs to create the lace motifs. Crochet finishing, worked with a 3.5mm crochet hook, provides polished edges and helps secure the garment pieces together.

Materials and Equipment

This project requires worsted weight yarn from Willow Knits Silk, with yardage varying by size: 300g for size Small, 400g for sizes Medium and Large, 500g for size 1X, and 600g for sizes 2X and 3X. Knitters will need 4mm (US 6) straight needles for the main construction and one 4mm 80cm circular needle for working certain sections. A 3.5mm (US E/4) crochet hook is required for finishing details. Additional notions include two stitch holders or large safety pins for holding stitches, two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, and two drop or pendant beads for decorative embellishment.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 19 stitches and 25 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using 4mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the proper finished measurements. The bolero is designed to have a fitted bust measurement with approximately 3 inches of positive ease across all sizes. Length measurements range from 10 inches at the underarm for smaller sizes to 12 inches for larger sizes, with sleeve length varying from 4 inches to 5 inches depending on size.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle lace work and garment construction. Knitters should be comfortable reading pattern instructions, managing multiple pieces, and understanding lace knitting techniques before beginning this project.
