Match a pattern to pre-cuts or yardage

A pre-cut-friendly design can shorten preparation and preserve a coordinated collection. It may still require background, borders, binding and backing from yardage. List those separately rather than treating the bundle count as the complete fabric requirement.

When cutting yardage, square the edge, follow the width-of-fabric instructions and label each group immediately. Directional motifs need extra planning because rotated triangles or rectangles can make part of the print run sideways.

Calculate the complete quilt

Top dimensions are not backing dimensions. Add the pattern's allowance for quilting and decide whether the backing will be one wide piece or joined panels. Binding has its own strip count, joins and seam allowance. Batting should extend beyond the top according to the quilting method.

If changing quilt size, calculate repeated blocks first, then recalculate background, borders, backing and binding. Buying one extra pre-cut pack may not supply the continuous yardage needed elsewhere.

Finish blocks, tote quilts and full-size projects

Square blocks only to the dimensions stated and preserve seam allowances at points. Stay-stitch bias edges that will be handled repeatedly. For a tote quilt or other functional object, reinforce handles and openings and choose quilting density for regular use.
