What makes a tunic a tunic

Length, mostly. A tunic runs past the hip, usually somewhere between the top of the thigh and mid-thigh, and is designed to be worn over something rather than tucked in. That extra length changes how it must be knitted: the fabric carries more weight, so drape and shaping matter more than they do in a cropped jumper. The designs here range from sleeveless summer tunics to long-sleeved winter ones, with A-line shapes that flare gently, swing shapes with a lot of movement, and straight tunics that rely on side slits to stop them pulling across the hips.

Choosing a shape

• A-line: increases worked gradually down the body. Flattering, forgiving and the easiest to wear over leggings.
• Straight with side slits: the slits let the fabric hang instead of gripping, and they are simple to knit.
• Swing or trapeze: cast on very wide at the hem and decrease upwards. Dramatic, and yarn-hungry.
• Belted: a straight body with a tie at the natural waist, which lets one garment read two ways.
• Sleeveless: a summer layer, and the fastest of the lot.

Yarn weight and drape

Drape is the deciding factor for a longer garment. 4 ply and DK hang best, moving with the wearer rather than standing away from the body. Aran and chunky knit up faster but produce a heavy tunic that can look and feel like a coat, so keep chunky designs shorter or more open in the stitch pattern. Fibres with natural fluidity, such as alpaca, silk blends, bamboo and viscose, exaggerate the drape and will lengthen with wear; wool holds its shape more reliably. Cotton is cool for summer but has no memory, so expect a cotton tunic to grow a few centimetres over its first season.

Sizing a longer garment

Choose your size by the finished bust measurement, then look separately at the hip. A tunic that fits at the bust but is narrow at the hem will ride up all day. If the pattern is straight-sided and your hip measurement is larger than your bust, add stitches at the cast on and decrease them away up the body, or simply knit the lower body one size larger. Check the finished length against a top you already own and like the length of, measured from the shoulder down; this is far more reliable than imagining it.

Knitting quantity

Tunics use noticeably more yarn than a standard jumper of the same size, sometimes several hundred metres more, because of the extra length and the flare. Work from the metreage stated for your size, buy in a single dye lot, and add one spare ball if you intend to lengthen the body or the sleeves.

Finishing and care

Block firmly to the pattern's schematic before seaming, and measure the length while the piece is pinned out rather than after. Seam with mattress stitch, and consider reinforcing the shoulder seams with matching tape so the weight of a long body does not drag them out of shape. Wash by hand unless the yarn is superwash, dry flat, and always fold rather than hang, since a wet or heavy tunic will lengthen permanently on a hanger.
