Tunic & Sweater Knitting Pattern – King Cole Chunky (Leaflet 4506)
This King Cole pattern 4506 is a downloadable PDF offering two distinct knitwear designs worked in King Cole Chunky weight yarn: a longline tunic and a classic sweater. Both garments are rated as intermediate difficulty and are sized to fit a range of bust/chest measurements from 81 cm to 117 cm (32 in to 46 in), making them accessible across a broad range of sizes. A donation is made to the Pink Ribbon Foundation with every King Cole pattern purchased.
About the Designs
The Tunic
The tunic is a longer-length pullover designed to be worn over leggings or slim trousers. Its extended body length gives it a relaxed, contemporary silhouette. The construction features shaped raglan armholes, which create a smooth, diagonal seam line running from the underarm to the neckline rather than a traditional set-in sleeve. This raglan shaping is a hallmark of comfortable, easy-to-wear knitwear and suits chunky-weight fabrics particularly well. The neckline is finished by picking up stitches around the front neck and working a neat neckband, giving a polished, professional result.
The Sweater
The sweater is a more standard-length pullover sharing the same yarn, needle sizes, and tension as the tunic. Like the tunic, it is constructed with raglan armhole shaping, ensuring a consistent and flattering fit. The two designs together offer versatility within a single pattern leaflet, allowing knitters to choose the style that best suits their wardrobe.
Techniques Used
- Raglan armhole shaping – stitches are cast off and then decreased at regular intervals to form the diagonal raglan seam, a technique requiring careful row-by-row attention.
- Increasing and decreasing – standard shaping methods used throughout the body, sleeves, and neckline to achieve the correct silhouette.
- Picking up stitches – stitches are picked up evenly along the left and right sides of the front neck and combined with held centre-front stitches to work the neckband seamlessly.
- Cable knitting – the pattern includes cable panels worked over multiple stitches, adding textural interest and visual depth to the fabric.
- Twist stitches – a T2 (Twist 2) technique is used, created by knitting into the second stitch on the needle before the first, then slipping both off together, producing a neat twisted-rope effect.
- Tension/gauge swatching – the pattern strongly emphasises working a tension square before beginning, adjusting needle size as necessary to achieve the correct stitch and row count.
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (st-st) – the main fabric stitch, worked with knit rows on the right side and purl rows on the wrong side, creating a smooth, classic knitted surface.
- Garter stitch (gst) – every row knitted, producing a ridged, reversible fabric typically used for borders, hems, or contrast texture panels.
- C5B (Cable 5 Back) – two stitches are slipped to a cable needle held at the back, three stitches are knitted from the left-hand needle, then the two held stitches are knitted, creating a cable that twists to the right.
- C5F (Cable 5 Front) – three stitches are slipped to a cable needle held at the front, two stitches are knitted from the left-hand needle, then the three held stitches are knitted, creating a cable that twists to the left.
- T2 (Twist 2) – a simple two-stitch twist worked without a cable needle, adding a subtle rope-like detail.
- Slip stitch decreases (sl, K1, psso) – used in shaping to create neat, left-leaning decreases.
- Knit two together (K2tog) – a standard right-leaning decrease used in raglan and other shaping sections.
