How to use a library this size

A pattern library running to tens of thousands of free PDFs is only useful if you can narrow it fast. The quickest route is to decide two things before you filter: what you are making it out of, and how long you are willing to spend. Yarn weight and craft type cut the list dramatically, and difficulty cuts it again. If you already have yarn in a basket, filter by its weight first — that single decision removes most of the patterns that would have ended in a substitution headache.

Free patterns by craft

• Knitting: the largest section by far, covering jumpers, hats, socks, blankets, baby sets and accessories in every weight from lace to super chunky.
• Crochet: amigurumi, granny squares, blankets, cardigans and homeware, most written in UK or US terms with the convention stated at the top of the PDF.
• Cross stitch and embroidery: counted charts and hoop designs, usually with a full DMC thread list.
• Sewing and quilting: bags, garments, and quilt blocks, often with printable pattern pieces to tile at home.

Reading a free PDF before you cast on

Free patterns vary more in detail and style than paid ones, because they come from brands and independent designers alike. Read the whole pattern through once before you start. Check three things in particular: the stated tension and over what stitch pattern it is measured, whether crochet terms are UK or US, and whether the yarn quantity is given in metres or in balls of a specific discontinued shade. If quantities are only listed in balls, look up the metreage of that yarn and work from the total — that is what lets you substitute confidently.

Choosing by how much time you have

An evening gets you a dishcloth, a pair of fingerless mitts, a small amigurumi or a hoop-sized embroidery. A weekend covers a chunky hat, a cowl, a simple bag or a cushion cover. A fortnight of evenings is realistic for a child's cardigan, a shawl or a lap blanket. Adult jumpers and full-size blankets are month-long projects however experienced you are, simply because of the stitch count. Being honest about this at the start is the single best predictor of whether a project gets finished.

Substituting yarn safely

Most abandoned projects come from a substitution that was made on colour rather than on numbers. Match the weight and the tension first, then check the fibre behaves similarly: wool has memory and holds ribbing, cotton has almost none and grows under its own weight, alpaca drapes heavily, acrylic is springy and washable. Work a tension square at least 15cm across, wash it the way you would wash the finished item, and measure the middle. If you are half a stitch out over 10cm, change needle or hook size before you commit a whole project to it.

Building a small tool kit

You need remarkably little to work through this library. A set of needles or hooks in the sizes you use most, a tape measure, stitch markers, a darning needle for weaving ends, sharp scissors and a notebook for tension results will cover the vast majority of free patterns here. Add a row counter if you work lace or cables, and blocking mats and pins if you make shawls, where blocking transforms the finished piece rather than merely tidying it.
