Margaret's Hug Healing Shawl / Prayer Shawl
What Is Being Made
Margaret's Hug Healing Shawl is a crocheted prayer shawl designed to provide comfort and warmth. This triangular shawl is worked from the neck down, creating a draped garment that measures approximately 70 inches point to point. The shawl is ideal for gifting to those seeking comfort, making it a meaningful handmade present for healing and support.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the crochet technique, worked by holding two strands of yarn together throughout the pattern. This doubling method creates a thicker, more substantial fabric while using double knit weight yarn, resulting in a cozy, durable finished piece. The shawl is constructed with a triangular silhouette that drapes elegantly when worn.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners:
- Chain stitches (ch) – used to create the foundation and increase rows
- UK Double Crochet / US Single Crochet (dc/sc) – basic stitch for fabric structure
- UK Treble / US Double Crochet (tr/dc) – used at the top edge, measured at 3 stitches per 2.5cm
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds and finish edges
Materials Required
This beginner-friendly pattern requires minimal materials. You will need 600 grams of double knit yarn (also known as 8ply or yarn weight #3), a 7mm crochet hook (US size L), and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. The pattern is designed to work with double knit yarn held as two strands, though the designer notes that other yarns may be substituted with resulting changes to gauge and finished size.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The gauge is measured at 3 treble/double crochet stitches and 1 row equaling 2.5cm or 1 inch. The finished shawl measures approximately 70 inches from neck edge point to point, creating a generous triangular wrap. These measurements are approximated, and individual variations may occur based on tension and yarn choice.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent introduction to shawl construction for new crocheters. The straightforward stitch combinations and basic techniques make this project accessible while still producing a beautiful, meaningful finished item.
