Will you remember 2020? I created this shawl during the global lockdown due to Covid-19 and the global uprising in response to racial injustice. I used the creative process as means for comfort and stress release. I love eyelets, and interspersed them throughout my design, and also as a way to create a border. This is a simple and easy knit where gauge is not critical and any weight yarn can be used (with adjustments). You can reduce the number of rows for a smaller shawl or increase them for a larger one. I hope you will enjoy this pattern as much as I did creating and knitting it up!

What Is Being Made
The Will You Remember Shawl is a triangular knit shawl designed by Marina Scott of Heartbun Knits and More. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 53 inches wide by 24½ inches long when blocked, though the design allows for customization of size. The shawl was created during the global lockdown of 2020 and serves as a meaningful commemorative piece reflecting on that significant period in history.
Design Features and Techniques
The Will You Remember Shawl showcases a thoughtful use of eyelets as a primary design element. These decorative openwork details are interspersed throughout the pattern and also function as a decorative border, adding both visual interest and an airy quality to the finished piece. The eyelet technique creates small holes in the fabric that allow light to pass through, giving the shawl a delicate, lacy appearance.
This is classified as a beginner-level knitting project, making it accessible to knitters who are new to shawl construction. The pattern is notably flexible—gauge is not critical for this project, which reduces pressure on knitters to match exact tension. Additionally, the pattern accommodates any yarn weight with appropriate adjustments, and knitters can customize the finished size by reducing or increasing the number of rows as desired for a smaller or larger shawl.
Stitches and Knitting Methods
While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch abbreviations, the pattern employs standard knitting stitches combined with the eyelet technique mentioned throughout. The eyelet openwork is a fundamental stitch pattern used in lace and decorative knitting, created by combining yarn overs with decreases to form intentional holes in the fabric.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn: The pattern calls for Lion Brand Mandala Wool Blend in the colorway Zeus. One ball of this yarn contains 590 yards and weighs 150 grams, classified as DK (double knit) weight. DK weight yarn is a medium-weight option that works up relatively quickly while still providing good stitch definition for eyelet details.
Needles: US 8 (5 mm) needles are recommended, though knitters should size up or down as needed to obtain the specified gauge of 14 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch.
Additional Notions: A yarn needle is required for weaving in ends upon completion.
Pattern Flexibility and Customization
One of the strengths of the Will You Remember Shawl pattern is its adaptability. Knitters can work with any yarn weight by making appropriate adjustments to needle size and stitch counts. The ability to add or subtract rows allows crafters to create a shawl in their preferred dimensions, whether they desire a smaller wrap or a larger statement piece. This flexibility makes the pattern suitable for stash-busting and experimentation with different yarns.
