Product Description

Errata: Initial versions of the pattern listed the stitch count at the end of Row 6 as 26. The correct count is 29. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vostok is an ethereally lacy half-pi shawl designed especially to showcase Dream in Color’s March 2012 Dream Club offering. The shawl features several, distinctive and delicate motifs and a wide, knitted-on border that eliminates the need to bind off hundreds of stitches along the bottom edge. Beginning with a garter tab cast-on of just a few stitches, Vostok is worked from the top down and reaches a finished size, after blocking, of 60 inches wide by 24 inches deep, which allows it either to drape elegantly across the shoulders or to wrap, scarf or kerchief-like around the neck. Vostok's lace sections are primarily charted, and have lace worked on both the right side and the wrong side of the shawl. **Uses 1100 yards of lace weight yarn.

Vostok Shawl by Beth Kling

What Is Being Made

Vostok is a graceful lace shawl designed by Beth Kling. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a triangular shawl with finished measurements of 60 inches (152.4 cm) wide by 24 inches (60.9 cm) deep. The design features crystalline lace throughout, making it an elegant accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty. The shawl is knit flat using circular needles, and the construction involves a provisional cast-on worked with a crochet hook and waste yarn. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and techniques appropriate for knitters with some experience beyond the beginner level.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The Vostok pattern employs a variety of fundamental and decorative knitting stitches to create its lace structure:

  • Basic stitches: Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation
  • Twisted stitches: Knit through the back loop (ktbl) and purl through the back loop (ptbl) add textural variation
  • Yarn overs: Yarn over (yo) stitches create the characteristic openwork and lace holes throughout the design
  • Decreases: Knit 2 together (k2tog), slip-slip-knit (ssk), purl 2 together (p2tog), knit 3 together (k3tog), and knit 3 together through the back loop (k3tog tbl) shape the shawl and create lace patterning
  • Finishing: Bind off (bo) completes the edges

Materials and Yarn

The Vostok pattern calls for lace weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Dream in Color Absolutely Marvelous Dream Club from the March 2012 colorway, which is composed of 50% silk and 50% wool. One skein provides 1,100 yards (1,005 meters) per 4 ounces (113 grams), offering ample yardage for the complete shawl.

Tools and Equipment

The following tools are required or recommended for completing the Vostok shawl:

  • Needles: One pair of US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, at least 24 inches long, for knitting the main fabric
  • Provisional cast-on: A crochet hook in size F (3.75 mm) and several yards of smooth waste yarn approximately the same weight as the main yarn
  • Finishing: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Blocking (optional): T-pins and blocking wires for shaping and finishing the completed shawl

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 8 stitches and 8 rows to the inch (2.5 cm) in stockinette stitch, measured knit flat and unblocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions of 60 inches wide by 24 inches deep.
