What is Being Made

Trejda is an intermediate-level knit hat designed by Helena Granholm. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a finished hat worked primarily in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles for the crown shaping.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses knitting as the primary craft. The hat is constructed using circular knitting methods, which involves working in continuous rounds rather than flat rows. This seamless construction technique is ideal for creating fitted headwear without requiring seaming.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Trejda pattern features a sophisticated stitch pattern repeat worked over 12 rounds in the main body section. The pattern combines fundamental knitting stitches to create shaping and visual interest:

• K (Knit): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
• K2tog (Knit Two Together): A right-leaning decrease used strategically throughout the pattern rounds

The main body pattern consists of a 12-stitch repeat that is worked for multiple pattern repeats. Rounds 9 through 12 are worked in stockinette stitch (knit every round) to allow the pattern to settle before the crown shaping begins.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Trejda pattern calls for 4-ply weight yarn with specific fiber content and yardage requirements. The recommended yarn is Yabuc, a luxury blend consisting of 65% baby wool, 25% yak, and 10% cashmere. Each ball provides 25 grams and 200 meters (218 yards) of yarn. The pattern requires 2 balls of yarn to complete the hat, totaling approximately 50 grams and 400 meters of yardage.

Needles and Gauge

The pattern uses 3.0 mm needles as the primary needle size. Knitters should switch to double-pointed needles (DPNs) when the circumference becomes too small to work comfortably on circular needles, typically during the crown decreasing section.

Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies two gauge measurements:

• Main body pattern gauge: 21 stitches and 34 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches)
