The Mimosa Shawl by Andrea Jurgrau
What Is Being Made
The Mimosa Shawl is an intermediate-level lace knitting project designed as a square shawl measuring 44 inches by 44 inches when blocked. This elegant accessory showcases lace-weight yarn combined with decorative crystal beads, making it suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions. The design allows for customization, as knitters can easily enlarge the finished dimensions by adding additional repeats of the charted pattern.
Knitting Techniques Used
This shawl employs classic lace knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level knitters. The construction utilizes charted lace patterns, specifically Chart A, which can be repeated to adjust the final size. Beading is incorporated throughout the design using a crochet hook method for bead placement, adding dimensional embellishment to the lace fabric. The pattern requires working with both circular needles and double-pointed needles, and includes corner shaping that demands careful stitch marker placement at each of the four corners to maintain structural integrity.
Stitches and Pattern Details
The shawl is worked in lace-weight yarn at a gauge of 5 stitches per inch when measured in the blocked pattern. The design incorporates 60 small fire-polished crystal beads (6mm size) strategically placed throughout the lace fabric. Stitch markers are essential for this project, with a minimum of four required to mark each corner, though additional markers may be used as preferred by the knitter. The pattern is charted, allowing knitters to follow visual instructions for the lace motifs and bead placement sequences.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
- Yarn: 1000 to 1260 yards of lace-weight yarn; the designer used approximately 4 ounces of JaggerSpun Zephyr Wool-Silk 2/18 in Cassis colorway
- Needles: US 4 (3.5mm) circular needles and a set of 5 double-pointed needles in the appropriate size for your gauge
- Beads: 60 small fire-polished crystal beads, 6mm size
- Additional Tools: Size 12-14 crochet hook for inserting beads, yarn needle for weaving in ends, stainless steel T-pins for blocking, and stitch markers (minimum of four, one for each corner)
Skill Level and Blocking
Designed for intermediate lace knitters, this project assumes familiarity with reading lace charts, managing multiple stitches on circular needles, and executing decreases and yarn-overs that create the openwork lace fabric. Proper blocking is essential to achieve the finished dimensions and to even out the lace pattern. The shawl requires blocking to 44 inches by 44 inches square, which sets the final gauge at 5 stitches per inch in the pattern.
