Product Description
Designed by myself, this warm cowl is part of a series of cowls I'm doing inspired by New York, my home state. They are designed to be comfortable, fun to knit, and perfect to wear with a stylish wool coat or a denim jacket.
The Greenwich Village Cowl is named after my favorite part of New York City. Located on the west side of Lower Manhattan, this Bohemian neighborhood is a haven for artists and musicians of all types. This cowl reminds me of Greenwich Village because it’s unconventional, artistic, and one-of-a-kind.
Suggested yarns: Anything worsted weight. Use your scraps! Needle size: 11 (8.0mm)
Full color PDF pattern file will be available for download. Includes photos and row by row stitch counts!

The Greenwich Village Cowl
What is Being Made
The Greenwich Village Cowl is a knitted cowl neck accessory designed by Janet Jameson for Aunt Janet's Designs. This beginner-friendly project creates a versatile neck warmer featuring a distinctive multi-colored striped design with functional button closures and decorative fringe detailing.
Techniques Used
This cowl employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The primary construction method involves holding two strands of yarn simultaneously throughout the project—one consistent base color and a second color that changes every two rows to create the striped effect. The designer uses a color-switching technique where both strands are cut after every two rows, leaving generous tails that serve as fringe embellishment rather than being woven in. Additional techniques include casting on, binding off stitches to create buttonholes, and casting on new stitches to close those openings, making this an excellent project for practicing these essential skills.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch throughout the entire cowl, worked across in simple rows to create a garter stitch fabric
- Bind off: Used to secure stitches, particularly for creating the three buttonhole openings spaced across the cowl
- Cast on: Applied both at the project's beginning (20 stitches) and during the buttonhole row to close the openings and maintain stitch count
Materials
The Greenwich Village Cowl requires worsted weight yarn—approximately 7 ounces total of scraps or remnants in multiple colors. You will need Size 11 (8mm) knitting needles to work with the aran/worsted weight yarn at the appropriate gauge. The project also calls for three 1-inch buttons to fasten the buttonholes and a yarn needle for finishing details.
