Snowballs Knitting Pattern by Stana D. Sortor

What Is Being Made

Snowballs is a beginner-friendly knitting toy pattern designed to create small decorative spheres approximately 7–8 centimeters in diameter. These soft, stuffed knitted balls are perfect for holiday decoration, play, or gift-giving. The pattern produces a classic white snowball shape using simple knitting techniques suitable for crafters new to the hobby.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The design employs circular knitting (also called knitting in the round), which creates seamless fabric by working continuously around the circumference rather than in flat rows. Circular knitting is an essential technique for creating three-dimensional forms like spheres, and this pattern introduces beginners to this fundamental skill in an accessible way.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern uses straightforward stitches appropriate for beginner knitters:

  • Garter stitch (referred to as "hladce" in the original Czech instructions) – the basic smooth knit stitch worked consistently throughout most rounds to create an even fabric surface
  • Yarn overs (abbreviated as "nahodit") – a simple increase technique that creates new stitches by wrapping yarn around the needle, used strategically to expand the sphere from a small starting point to its full diameter

The increases are distributed evenly across rounds to ensure the ball maintains a symmetrical, spherical shape as it grows. The pattern demonstrates how simple stitch combinations can create dimensional forms.

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: A small quantity of white worsted-weight yarn is needed—approximately 15 meters of yarn per snowball. Worsted weight is a medium thickness that works quickly and is ideal for beginner projects.

Needles and Notions: The pattern calls for short double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size 3.5mm, with four needles used to distribute stitches evenly for circular knitting. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, a crochet hook for finishing, scissors, a stitch marker to identify the beginning of each round, and fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed ball.

Gauge and Sizing

The test swatch establishes a gauge of 18 stitches and 25 rows over a 10-centimeter square, which helps knitters verify their tension matches the pattern's specifications. Accurate gauge ensures the finished snowball reaches the intended 7–8 centimeter diameter.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, Snowballs introduces knitters to circular knitting and basic shaping techniques without overwhelming complexity. The pattern uses only two fundamental stitch techniques and a clear, methodical increase sequence, making it an excellent first toy project for those learning to knit in the round.
