Simple Shawl by Roxi Crochet
Project Overview
The Simple Shawl is a beginner-friendly crochet design that creates a triangular wrap. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Roxi Crochet provides complete instructions for constructing a soft, wearable shawl suitable for those new to crochet techniques.
What Is Being Made
This project produces a triangular crochet shawl worked from the top down. The finished dimensions measure approximately 184 cm (72.44 inches) across the base and 88 cm (34.64 inches) from top to bottom, created over 41 rows. The shawl uses approximately 700 grams of yarn, making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a shoulder piece.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Simple Shawl employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern uses a repetitive stitch structure that builds the triangular shape through strategic increases and spacing. The design relies on creating groups of stitches separated by chain spaces, which allows the shawl to expand evenly from the top point outward and downward. This construction method is common in triangular shawl patterns and creates an elegant drape.
Stitches Used
- Slip Stitch (SL) – Used to join rounds and connect stitches without adding height
- Single Crochet (SC) – Listed in the stitch guide for foundational single-row work
- Double Crochet (DC) – The primary stitch used throughout most rows, worked in groups of three to create texture and structure
- Triple Crochet (TRC) – Used selectively within the pattern for variation and shaping
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern specifies a wool and acrylic blend yarn purchased by the kilogram. The designer notes that any type of yarn may be substituted, including fancy yarn, mohair, or standard yarn, provided the yarn is very soft. The softness requirement ensures the finished shawl drapes comfortably and feels pleasant against the skin.
Crochet Hook: A 7.00 mm crochet hook is required for this project.
Additional Tools: Yarn needle and scissors are needed to complete the project.
Pattern Structure
The shawl begins with a foundation chain of 7 stitches joined into a ring. Subsequent rows expand the piece through the addition of double crochet groups separated by chain spaces. The pattern demonstrates a methodical increase pattern: each row adds stitches in designated chain spaces from the previous row, with triple crochet stitches used strategically to maintain shaping. The repetitive nature of the stitch pattern makes it accessible for beginners while producing professional results.
