Product Description

This modern classic men’s pullover can be made with a fitted, tapered body or a roomier untapered version. Made from a sport weight yarn, this sweater is a great layering piece: it’s light enough that when worn indoors, you won't overheat.

An apparently simple pattern, there are a number of features designed in to give an optimal fit.

The sleeves are a hybrid of saddle shoulder and raglan with a set of ribs running up each which gives a tidy appearance with room to move your arms.

There are short rows shaping the shoulder slope on the front and back pieces.

The tapered torso avoids extra fabric around the waist while ensuring a good fit through the shoulders and chest.

Pattern takes 8 (9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) balls of the specified yarn. Shown in Brown Sheep Naturespun Sport; 184 yds/168 m per 50 g. Look for a yarn that works well at 24 sts per 4"/10 cm in St st.

What is Being Made

The Sandpoint Pullover is a modern classic men's pullover sweater designed by Elizabeth Morrison. This versatile layering piece offers two construction options: a fitted, tapered body or a roomier untapered version, allowing knitters to customize the fit to their preference. Made from sport weight yarn, the sweater is light enough for indoor wear without causing overheating, making it an ideal transitional garment for layering.

Finished Sizes and Gauge

The Sandpoint Pullover is available in a comprehensive range of finished chest sizes: 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, and 54 inches. The sample garment shown measures 40 inches. Proper gauge is essential for this project: 24 stitches and 32 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Sandpoint Pullover is rated as an intermediate difficulty project and employs a range of knitting techniques suitable for knitters with foundational skills.

Basic Techniques Required:

  • Knit and purl stitches for stockinette stitch fabric
  • Increases and decreases for shaping the body and sleeves
  • Seaming techniques to join knitted pieces

Advanced Techniques:

  • Short rows for shaping and contouring
  • Zipper installation for a polished front closure

The primary stitch used throughout the garment is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. Ribbing is incorporated for the cuffs and waistband, providing elasticity and a finished appearance.

Yarn and Materials

The Sandpoint Pullover is knitted using Brown Sheep Naturespun Sport, a 100% wool yarn in sport weight. The sample garment is worked in color 701 Stone. Yarn requirements vary by size: 8 balls for the smallest size (34 inches) through 15 balls for the largest size (54 inches). Each ball contains 184 yards (168 meters) and weighs 50 grams (1.75 ounces). Note that Naturespun Sport is available on 1-pound cones for those preferring larger quantities.

Needles and Notions

This project requires two needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction:

  • US 4 needles (straight or circular) for working the main body and sleeves in stockinette stitch
  • US 2 needles (straight or circular) for ribbing sections

Additional notions include stitch holders or waste yarn for managing stitches during construction, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a zipper for the front closure. The pattern recommends purchasing the zipper after knitting is complete to ensure proper fit and length.
