While the pattern features inspiration from an ice cream sandwich aesthetic with brown and white colorways, the design accommodates virtually unlimited color combinations for personalization. Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Sammie Hat employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for an intermediate skill level. The primary stitch used throughout the pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The pattern incorporates essential shaping techniques including decreases (abbreviated as dec and k2tog for knit two together) to form the crown of the hat. Construction involves circular knitting, which allows for seamless, in-the-round construction typical of hat patterns. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including cast on (CO), bind off (BO), knit (k), marker (m), main color (MC), contrast color (CC), and end of row (EOR) notations.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Sammie Hat is worked in Malabrigo Rios, a worsted weight yarn composed of 100% Superwash Merino wool. This yarn choice allows the hat to knit up quickly while maintaining softness and durability. The yardage requirement is minimal: 1 skein of main color (MC) and less than 1/4 of a skein of contrast color (CC) are needed, making this an efficient pattern for yarn stash usage. Malabrigo Rios provides 210 yards per 100 grams.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern calls for one US 6/4.0 mm circular needle in 16-inch length for working the hat in the round. The recommended gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows in stockinette stitch over 4 inches when the finished fabric is washed and blocked. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements across all size options.
