Product Description
These little guys are actually very cute in person. The photos do not seem to do them justice. They are worked with the same body shape with different ears to make them different animals. With a change of colour and ear positions, other animals could be made.
They are knitted on 2 needles with 8 ply (DK) yarn so even a beginner can make him. They measure about 15cm (6") tall.
I do not allow the copying of my patterns of any type but I do allow the selling of the finished goods
Sam Bear and Friends Knitted Toy Collection
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern by Amalia Samios features a collection of small stuffed animal toys including a bear, dog, cat, elephant, and rabbit. Each finished toy measures approximately 15cm (6 inches) in height, making them ideal as small decorative pieces, gifts, or playthings. The pattern provides instructions for creating multiple character designs using basic knitting techniques.
Safety Notice: This pattern is not recommended for children under 3 years of age.
Knitting Techniques Used
The toys are constructed using fundamental knitting methods suitable for beginners to intermediate crafters. The main shaping technique involves strategic increases and decreases to form the three-dimensional body and head structure.
- Increases (inc): Used throughout the early rows to expand stitches and create the widest point of the toy body
- Decreases (k2tog): Knit two stitches together to reduce stitch count and shape the toy as it progresses toward completion
- Stockinette Stitch (st st): The primary fabric construction method, alternating one row of knit stitches with one row of purl stitches to create a smooth, classic knitted surface
Stitches and Construction Details
The pattern utilizes essential knitting stitches to build each toy from a small cast-on foundation. The body and head are worked as a single piece using the following stitch abbreviations:
- Cast on: Beginning with 7 stitches in the body color
- Purl (P): Creating the reverse side of stockinette stitch rows
- Knit (K): Creating the front-facing rows of the fabric
- Increase (inc): Adding stitches to expand the toy body
- Knit two together (k2tog): Decreasing stitches to shape and taper the design
- Purl two together (p2tog): An alternative decrease method for purl-side shaping
The construction follows a symmetrical pattern: stitches are increased progressively over the first 14 rows to reach a maximum of 40 stitches, then systematically decreased over subsequent rows to close and shape the toy.
Materials and Tools Required
To complete each toy in this collection, crafters will need:
- Knitting needles: 3mm needles (US size 2½) or an appropriate size to achieve desired fabric
- Yarn: Yarn in the body color of each character (specific yardage requirements are detailed in the full pattern)
- Additional materials: Contrasting yarn colors for details such as facial features and markings on the bear, dog, cat, elephant, and rabbit designs
Gauge Flexibility
An important feature of this toy pattern is that gauge—the number of stitches and rows per inch—does not significantly affect the finished project. Since these are toys and small variations in size are acceptable, crafters do not need to spend time achieving a precise gauge measurement. This makes the pattern accessible to knitters of varying skill levels and experience.
