Product Description
Shortly after I published my Felis Hattus pattern, a colleague got in touch with me to see if I’d be interested in contributing a couple of “craftivism” related patterns to a new book she was planning. I got thinking about other concepts and this one came up. The book offer didn't pan out, but the concept was such a good one that I decided to make it anyway.
As with Felis Hattus, this is a free pattern. If you like it, please consider donating to your favorite STEM-related cause, or some other organization fighting against the policies of the Trump regime. This administration is doing its best to halt innovation and discredit science in the US, making us less globally competitive and less prepared for the reality of climate change, among other things.
Fortunately, RESISTIMUS (Latin: we are resisting)!
Resistimus Knitted Scarf by Alasdair Post-Quinn
What is Being Made
Resistimus is a knitted scarf design created by independent designer Alasdair Post-Quinn. This downloadable PDF pattern is a free offering from the designer, inspired by craftivism concepts and created in support of the Science March held on April 22, 2017. The scarf represents a statement piece combining functional knitwear with meaningful messaging.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project uses knitting as its primary construction method. The pattern falls into the intermediate difficulty category, making it suitable for knitters with some foundational experience beyond absolute beginners. The design demonstrates thoughtful construction techniques typical of Alasdair Post-Quinn's work, which emphasizes both craftsmanship and conceptual depth in pattern design.
Yarn and Materials
The Resistimus scarf is worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn choice that provides good stitch definition and relatively quick project completion compared to lighter weights. Worsted weight yarn is versatile and widely available, making this pattern accessible to most knitters. Appropriate knitting needles sized for worsted weight yarn will be specified within the pattern PDF.
Design Context
Resistimus follows in the tradition of Alasdair Post-Quinn's earlier pattern, Felis Hattus, continuing the designer's exploration of craftivism—the intersection of craft and activism. The pattern was developed as a creative response to contemporary social movements, demonstrating how knitting can serve as a medium for personal expression and advocacy.
This free pattern is offered with the suggestion that knitters who enjoy it consider supporting STEM-related causes or organizations aligned with the pattern's activist inspiration.
