Product Description
Make a tiny colony of puffins!
This version comes with printable packaging for gifting or selling your puffins (or other small crochet items). You can get the free version of this pattern on my blog.
PATTERN DETAILS
This uses less than 100 yards of grey yarn. You can use yarn scraps for all other colors.
I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in the following shades:
- Granite Grey
- Mandarin Orange
- Pure Black
- Buttercup Yellow
- Dolphin Blue
The body, wings, and feet are joined with a slip stitch after each round. The wings and beak are worked as an oval. The beak is worked in continuous rounds.
I used some roving wool to create the face of each puffin. You can always sew or glue on a piece of off-white felt if you don’t have a felting needle.
Pocket Sized Puffin Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Pocket Sized Puffin is a small crocheted amigurumi-style toy designed by Picot Pals. This adorable puffin measures just 2 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall, making it a perfect pocket-sized companion or gift. The finished project features a charming bird with distinct body sections, wings, feet, and a characteristic beak, all worked in vibrant colors to capture the playful nature of a puffin.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental amigurumi construction techniques. The body, wings, and feet are joined using slip stitches after each round, creating clean seams between sections. The beak is worked in a continuous round, allowing for seamless shaping without visible joins. The wings and beak are both crafted as ovals, requiring understanding of how to increase and decrease stitches to form these curved shapes. Assembly brings all the individual components together into the final three-dimensional toy form.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches appropriate for intermediate crafters:
- Chain (ch) – Used for foundation and stitch construction
- Single Crochet (sc) – The primary stitch for building the body and structural elements
- Single Crochet Increase (inc) – Used to expand rounds and create shaping
- Single Crochet Decrease (dec) – Used to reduce stitches and form tapered sections
- Slip Stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and attach completed pieces together
Materials and Tools
This project requires minimal yardage, using less than 100 yards total. The yarn is Paintbox Yarn Cotton DK weight, worked with a 2.25 mm crochet hook (size B-1). Five distinct yarn colors bring the puffin to life: Granite Grey for the body, Pure Black for details, Mandarin Orange for the beak, Buttercup Yellow for accents, and Dolphin Blue for additional coloring. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces, scissors, white roving wool, and a felting needle for adding fine details or texture to the finished toy.
