Product Description

These chunky slipper socks are inspired by many trips to our local ice cream shop. They have a special pistachio soft serve and I had the perfect light green yarn at home.

Sometimes we are just too impatient to make socks with the tiny yarn and tiny needles. Thankfully Cascade's Cherub Chunky works up quickly for super soft and comfy socks.

Needles needed - US 7 DPNs, 9" circular, or 24" or longer circular for magic loop Personally I am a 9" circular fan. The smaller size slipper sock does not have enough stitches to fit around the 9" circular.

Slipper socks fit 7.5" (8.5", 9.5") foot circumference. Measure near ball of foot. Fits approximately women's shoe size 5-6 (7-8, 9-10)

What Is Being Made

The Pistachio Swirl Slipper Socks are chunky knitted socks designed for quick warmth and comfort. Inspired by soft serve pistachio ice cream, these socks combine cozy aesthetics with practical functionality. They are available in three sizes to fit women's shoe sizes 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10, with finished circumferences of 7.5, 8.5, and 9.5 inches respectively. The design prioritizes speed of completion while maintaining the softness and comfort expected from quality sock construction.

Knitting Techniques Used

This project employs fundamental sock knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The socks are worked in the round, a standard approach for seamless sock construction. Knitters have flexibility in their needle choice, with options to use double-pointed needles (DPNs), 9-inch circular needles, or longer circulars worked with the magic loop method. This adaptability allows crafters to select their preferred technique for working small circumferences in the round. The pattern incorporates basic decreasing techniques, including single right-leaning decreases and left-leaning decreases, which are essential for shaping the sock structure.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The Pistachio Swirl Slipper Socks utilize essential knitting stitches and abbreviations including:

  • Knit stitch (k) - the primary stitch for fabric creation
  • Purl stitch (p) - used for textural variation
  • Slip stitch (sl) - for joining rounds and creating clean edges
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) - a right-leaning decrease
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) - a left-leaning decrease created by slipping 2 stitches knitwise and knitting them together through the back loops
  • Bind off (BO) - for finishing the sock opening

The pattern works with stitch markers to denote the beginning of round and track pattern repeats throughout construction. The gauge is set at 17 stitches by 26 rows over a 4-inch square, which is typical for chunky weight yarn and creates the dense, warm fabric characteristic of these slipper socks.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Pistachio Swirl Slipper Socks require 1-2 skeins of Cascade Cherub Chunky yarn, or alternatively 136-272 yards of bulky weight yarn. The yardage range accommodates variations in leg length and foot size. The sample pictured used approximately 85 grams for an ankle sock in medium size. This chunky weight yarn choice directly contributes to the project's appeal for crafters seeking quick completion times—the thicker yarn works up rapidly compared to standard sock yarn weights.

Needles required are US size 7 (4.50mm), available in three formats: double-pointed needles, 9-inch circular needles, or longer circulars for magic loop technique. A yarn needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers for tracking pattern placement complete the notions list. The combination of chunky yarn and appropriately sized needles creates a fabric with excellent drape and warmth suitable for slipper-sock wear.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills in working in the round and executing basic decreases. The straightforward stitch vocabulary and construction method make it accessible to those with prior sock-knitting experience or intermediate knitters ready to tackle their first sock project with the advantage of chunky yarn's faster pace.
