Product Description

Dark and dusty, painted on the sky, misty taste of moonshine… Something about this design just calls to mind peaceful time spent traveling country roads—perhaps the simplicity, the airy fabric of the sheer yoke like a summer breeze, and the colors drawn from nature that shine in these beautiful yarns from Fiber for the People. Painted on the Sky is my idea of the perfect casual, warm weather knit, with clean lines, simple shaping, drapey fabric and lots of movement. It’s worked almost entirely in stockinette stitch from the bottom up, its standout detail a box pleat that can be worn in the front or back. A fluffy laceweight mohair/silk creates a nearly see-through yoke that adds airiness and a touch of luxury.

Painted on the Sky Knit Top by Kristen Jancuk

What Is Being Made

Painted on the Sky is a casual, warm weather knit top designed by Kristen Jancuk for independent knitters. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a versatile garment suitable for everyday wear, featuring clean lines and simple shaping that works across a wide range of sizes from XXS through 5X. The finished bust circumference ranges from 26 1/2 inches in the smallest size to 58 1/2 inches in the largest, ensuring options for diverse body types and fit preferences.

Design Features and Construction

The garment is worked from the bottom up using straightforward construction methods. The primary design element is a distinctive box pleat that offers styling flexibility—knitters can choose to wear this detail at the front or back of the top, allowing for personalized presentation. The top combines drapey, fluid fabric with lots of movement, creating a relaxed silhouette perfect for warm weather wear.

A standout feature of Painted on the Sky is its sheer laceweight yoke, crafted from a fluffy mohair and silk blend. This nearly see-through section adds airiness and a touch of luxury to the design, contrasting beautifully with the body of the garment and creating visual interest while maintaining breathability for summer comfort.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level pattern is worked almost entirely in stockinette stitch, making it accessible to knitters with foundational skills while remaining engaging through its shaping and yoke construction. The simplicity of the primary stitch allows the beautiful yarn colors and the mohair-silk blend to shine as design elements.

The pattern incorporates lace construction in the yoke section, where the laceweight mohair and silk create an open, delicate fabric that provides visual contrast and textural variety. The combination of stockinette body and lace yoke demonstrates how varying stitch patterns and yarn weights can work together within a single garment.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Painted on the Sky is designed to showcase beautiful yarns, with the designer specifically highlighting Fiber for the People as the yarn source. The pattern calls for 4-ply and laceweight yarn in complementary colors drawn from nature. The laceweight mohair and silk blend used for the yoke creates the signature nearly transparent effect, while the 4-ply weight forms the body of the top, allowing knitters to work with yarns that offer both structure and drape.

The pattern requires appropriate needles for both the 4-ply body yarn and the delicate laceweight yoke section, though specific needle sizes are detailed within the full PDF instructions.

Skill Level and Pattern Format

Rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, Painted on the Sky suits knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle simple shaping, yoke construction, and working with multiple yarn weights. The straightforward stockinette stitch base makes the pattern approachable, while the lace yoke and fitted shaping provide appropriate challenge for skill development.

This pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing immediate access for digital knitting reference and printing. The design is intended for personal, non-commercial use only, respecting the designer's copyright.
