New Moon Crochet Applique Pattern by Kerri's Crochet

What Is Being Made

The New Moon pattern is a crochet applique design that creates a decorative crescent moon with an accompanying eye motif. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Kerri's Crochet provides instructions for crafting a charming moon-themed embellishment suitable for garments, accessories, or decorative projects. The design features a lemon-colored crescent moon paired with a white eye and black pupil detail, with an optional poppy rose accent.

Available Sizes

The New Moon applique comes in three size options to accommodate different yarn weights and hook sizes:

  • Large Moon: 14cm x 21cm (5.5" x 8.25") using 8 ply yarn with a 3mm crochet hook
  • Medium Moon: 8.5cm x 14cm (3.5" x 5.5") using 4 ply crochet cotton with a 1.5mm hook
  • Small Moon: 6.5cm x 10cm (2.5" x 4") using 2 ply crochet cotton with a 1mm hook

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that build essential skills while creating an attractive finished piece. The construction begins with a magic loop, a popular foundation method for working in the round. The pattern utilizes a range of crochet stitches to shape and structure the applique:

  • Chain stitch (ch): The foundational stitch used to create loops and foundation rows
  • Double crochet (dc): A shorter stitch used for building fabric density and structure
  • Half treble crochet (htr): A medium-height stitch providing varied texture and shaping
  • Treble crochet (tr): A taller stitch used for creating lighter, more open sections
  • Double treble crochet (dtr): The tallest stitch in the pattern, offering dramatic height variation
  • Slip stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions between sections

Materials and Tools

The New Moon pattern calls for specific materials that contribute to the delicate, detailed nature of the finished applique. Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush 2 ply crochet cotton is the recommended yarn, with the designer using the following colors: (280) Lemon for the moon body, (106) Snow White for the eye white, (110) Black for the pupil, and a small amount of (390) Poppy Rose for optional accents. The lace-weight yarn classification ensures fine detail work and crisp stitch definition.

Essential tools include a crochet hook sized appropriately to your chosen project size (1mm, 1.5mm, or 3mm), scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in loose ends, and sewing thread with a needle for stitching the eye components securely to the moon base. These finishing tools ensure a professional, polished appearance.

Pattern Format and Support

This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it immediately accessible for digital reference while working. The designer offers supplementary instruction through a free video tutorial available on her YouTube channel, providing visual guidance for crocheters who benefit from seeing techniques demonstrated in real time.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the New Moon pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and techniques. The magic loop foundation and varied stitch heights require comfort with standard crochet methods, making this an excellent project for developing precision and stitch consistency.
