New Directions Quilt by Cait Lisle Designs – Pattern Summary

The New Directions Quilt is a beginner-friendly quilting pattern by Cait Lisle Designs, available as a downloadable PDF. Designed by Cait Lisle, this pattern puts a fresh, modern twist on traditional piecing techniques, making it accessible and enjoyable for quilters of all experience levels — from those picking up a rotary cutter for the first time to lifelong quilters looking for a satisfying, structured project.

The pattern includes instructions for three separate projects in one download: a Baby Quilt, a Throw Quilt, and a Cushion, giving makers the flexibility to choose the size that suits their needs or work through all three.

Projects Included

  • Baby Quilt – finished size approximately 36" x 48", a perfect size for a crib, pram, or play mat
  • Throw Quilt – finished size approximately 46½" x 62", ideal as a lap quilt or decorative throw
  • Cushion – finished size 18" x 18", a great way to use leftover fabric cuts and coordinate with the larger quilts

Design Aesthetic

The New Directions Quilt is rooted in modern quilting with a geometric, graphic sensibility. Cait Lisle's signature approach involves taking classic quilting block structures and reimagining them with clean lines and bold colour contrast. The pattern uses a three-colour palette — designated as Blue [B], Orange [O], and White [W] — which creates striking visual movement across the quilt surface. A Swatch Chart is included in the pattern so makers can attach fabric swatches or shade with coloured pencils to plan their own colour combinations before cutting.

Techniques Used

  • Strip piecing – fabric is cut into precise width-of-fabric (WOF) strips and sub-cut into rectangles, a highly efficient and beginner-friendly construction method
  • Precise rotary cutting – the pattern calls for cutting WOF strips at specific widths (e.g., 1½" and 1" strips) and sub-cutting into rectangles of varying lengths, requiring careful measuring and cutting for accurate results
  • Seam pressing – seam allowances are pressed in the direction of arrows indicated throughout the pattern, a standard quilting technique that reduces bulk and ensures flat, accurate blocks
  • Traditional piecing with a modern twist – the overall construction follows well-established quilting piecing methods, reworked into a contemporary geometric design
  • Binding – the pattern includes binding instructions for finishing the quilt edges neatly
  • Cushion construction – the cushion version includes a lining and backing, offering a complete, self-contained finishing technique

Fabric Requirements and Materials

The pattern is designed for quilting cotton or similar woven fabric. All cutting is based on a width of fabric (WOF) assumed to be 42", which is standard for most quilting cottons. The pattern uses Fat Quarters (FQ, 18" x 22") and Fat Eighths (F8, 9" x 22") as well as yardage cuts, making it easy to shop from pre-cut fabric bundles or off the bolt.

  • Baby Quilt fabric requirements: Blue [B] – 1¾ yds; Orange [O] – 1 FQ; White [W] – ¾ yd; Backing – 1¾ yds; Batting – 48" x 60"; Binding – 1 FQ
