Product Description

Mystic Delight was originally published as a mystery knitalong (Mystic KAL).

Mystic Delight is a whimsical shawl, designed with bright and happy colors in mind.

I selected the colors on a dark and gray winter day, when I really just needed some color to cheer me up, and Tanis Fiber Arts’ orange blossom and poppy colorways fit the bill perfectly. The final look of the shawl is greatly influenced by the colors chosen—bright combinations make it look cheerful, but it can become a classic, elegant shawl if you choose more conservative colors such as cream and charcoal.

This is the first Mystic shawl to use multiple colors in the design. Each section of the body is different but complementary, to add some variety to the knitting. There is a diamond pattern that goes from solid to nupps to lacy holes. It’s easily memorizable, and a fairly relaxing knit.

The knitting finishes with an intricate lace border that uses common lace stitches, twisted stitches, and separation betwe

Mystic Delight Knit Shawl by Anna Dalvi

Project Overview

Mystic Delight is an advanced knit shawl design created by independent designer Anna Dalvi. This downloadable PDF pattern produces a large, elegant triangular shawl with impressive dimensions and sophisticated stitch work suitable for experienced knitters.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a substantial knit shawl with a wingspan of 94 inches (240 cm) and a height of 47 inches (120 cm) when blocked. The shawl is designed as a triangular wrap, ideal for draping over shoulders or wearing as a statement accessory. The generous finished size makes it suitable for layering or as a dramatic evening wrap.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Mystic Delight shawl employs several advanced knitting techniques. The pattern uses charted stitch patterns that are worked symmetrically across the shawl. The construction method involves increasing stitches throughout the project—the pattern specifically instructs knitters to add repeats of charted stitches in designated sections, building the triangular shape progressively. The shawl is worked from a small cast-on edge and expands outward through strategic stitch additions, a common technique in shawl construction. Blocking is essential to achieving the finished dimensions and proper drape.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern is worked using charted stitch patterns that create the visual design of the shawl. The construction begins with a cable cast-on of 5 stitches and incorporates knit and purl stitches arranged in specific charted sequences. The pattern uses multiple chart sections (Chart A and subsequent charts) that are repeated and combined to build the full design. Edge stitches (knit stitches on the sides) frame the charted pattern sections, creating clean selvage edges.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Two skeins of Red Label Cash Silk Single from Tanis Fiber Arts in complementary colors (orange blossom and poppy or similar). Each skein contains 420 yards (384 meters) and weighs 115 grams. The yarn is composed of 75% merino, 15% cashmere, and 10% silk, providing a luxurious blend with excellent drape and softness. This is a sport weight yarn.
  • Needles: 3.75 mm (US Size 5) knitting needles
  • Notions: Large-eyed, blunt needle for weaving in ends

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 14 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in pattern, measured after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the correct finished dimensions of 94 inches wingspan by 47 inches height.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters. The combination of charted stitch patterns, strategic increases, and the large scale of the project require solid foundational knitting skills and comfort reading and following detailed charts.
