Product Description
Who has not read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland? Alice falls through a rabbit hole and finds herself in an enchanted fantasy world. In this world she meets peculiar creatures.
Alice encounters the Hatter initially at a tea party. He is popularly referred to as the "Mad Hatter", but is never called by this name in the book—although the Cheshire Cat does warn Alice that he is mad, and the Hatter's eccentric behaviour supports this.
In my shop are also patterns for Alice, the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat.
This pattern is available in English (using US crochet terms). It is 10 pages long with 26 images to help you with details like the jacket, hair and eyes.
Size: The Mad Hatter is 8 inches tall (20.3 cm). This includes the hat.
Mad Hatter Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
The Mad Hatter is an amigurumi crochet doll designed by Sayjai Thawornsupacharoen of K and J Dolls. This finished doll stands approximately 8 inches (20 cm) tall, including the hat. The project creates a three-dimensional stuffed character doll suitable for display, play, or gift-giving. Amigurumi is the Japanese craft of crocheting small, stuffed fabric toys and dolls, and this pattern follows that tradition by constructing a complete character figure.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques. The doll is worked in continuous rounds without joining or turning between rounds, which is a hallmark of amigurumi construction. This method creates seamless, spiral fabric that is ideal for stuffed toys. The crocheter marks the first stitch of each round to track progress through the pattern.
Crochet Stitches Used
The Mad Hatter pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches appropriate for amigurumi work:
- Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation chains and stitch creation
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building dense, sturdy fabric in amigurumi
- Half double crochet (hdc) – used for varied texture and stitch height
- Double crochet (dc) – employed for areas requiring taller stitches
- Slip stitch (sl) – used for joining when necessary
Materials and Tools
The pattern accommodates flexible yarn choices while providing specific guidance. Crafters work with 4 ply yarn in multiple colors to create the character's different elements: cream, green, dark green, mint, white, yellow, black, and red. A 3.00 mm crochet hook is recommended to pair with the 4 ply yarn weight, though the pattern notes that any hook size matching the chosen yarn can be used. Additional materials include polyester fiberfill for stuffing the doll to create its three-dimensional form, two 4 mm black beads for buttons, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and a sewing needle with thread for securely attaching the beads as buttons to the finished doll.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-part projects and color changes. The continuous-round construction and need to manage multiple yarn colors require more experience than beginner patterns, but the stitches themselves remain fundamental to crochet.
