Lisabet Cape Knitting Pattern for Girls – MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino
The Lisabet Cape is a charming winter cape knitting pattern designed for girls, published by MillaMia and available as a downloadable PDF. Conceived as part of a mother-and-daughter pairing, this generously sized cape is intended to grow with the child, offering excellent long-term wearability. The pattern is rated as improving/beginner level, making it an ideal project for knitters who are ready to move beyond the basics and explore simple cable techniques within a straightforward construction framework.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a knitted girls' cape worked in a classic, cosy silhouette. It features a structured body with cable detailing, a ribbed edging that runs all around the outer edges, and a separate collar. The cape is designed to be generously sized, fitting the recipient for multiple years. Four sizes are available:
- Age 2–4: Wrist to wrist 53 cm (21 in), length to shoulder 35 cm (13¾ in)
- Age 4–6: Wrist to wrist 63 cm (24¾ in), length to shoulder 45 cm (17¾ in)
- Age 6–8: Wrist to wrist 73 cm (28¾ in), length to shoulder 56 cm (22 in)
- Age 8–10: Wrist to wrist 82 cm (32½ in), length to shoulder 66 cm (26 in)
Construction and Techniques
The Lisabet Cape is constructed using a bottom-up, worked flat, seamed method. The front and back panels are knitted separately as flat pieces and then joined. This approach is well suited to beginner and improving knitters, as it avoids the complexity of working in the round for the main body while still producing a neat, structured garment.
The construction begins by casting on stitches for the lower edge and working upward, with incremental shaping achieved through make-one (m1) increases on either side of the central pattern panel. A circular needle is introduced as the stitch count grows, though the knitting continues to be worked back and forth in rows rather than in the round — a practical solution for managing a large number of stitches comfortably.
The edging is worked separately as a long ribbed strip and then sewn around the outer edges of the front and back panels, giving the cape a tidy, professional finish. The collar is also worked as a separate piece, cast on with a generous stitch count that varies by size, ensuring a comfortable neckline fit.
Stitches Used
The pattern draws on a small but effective set of stitches and techniques:
- Stocking stitch (stockinette): Used for the main body panels, with two stitches in stocking stitch maintained at each end of every row to create neat selvedge edges.
- Seed stitch / moss stitch rib: The edging is worked in a k1, p1 rib variation, creating a flexible, decorative border that frames the entire outer edge of the cape.
- Cable 8 Front (C8F): Slip the next 4 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the front of the work, knit 4 stitches, then knit the 4 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a left-leaning cable cross.
- Cable 8 Back (C8B): Slip the next 4 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the back of the work, knit 4 stitches, then knit the 4 stitches from the cable needle. This creates a right-leaning cable cross.
- Make 1 (m1) increases: Used symmetrically on either side of the pattern to shape the cape as it grows from the lower edge toward the shoulders.
The cable stitches — C8F and C8B — are the defining decorative feature of the Lisabet Cape. Eight-stitch cables are bold and visually striking, yet they follow a simple, regular repeat that is easy to memorise, making them very manageable
