Je t'aime Socks by Atelier des Glenettes

Project Overview

Je t'aime is a knitted sock pattern designed for girls and women, offered as a downloadable PDF by independent designer Atelier des Glenettes. This beginner-friendly knitting project provides comprehensive sizing across six size categories, accommodating foot circumferences from 16 cm to 26 cm (8 to 10¼ inches) and spanning 21 shoe sizes from French size 25 through 45 and US sizes 8 through 11. The pattern includes both children's and adult sizing options, making it versatile for various knitters and recipients.

What Is Being Made

The Je t'aime pattern produces a pair of fitted socks suitable for everyday wear. Available in sizes 2XS, XS, S, M, L, and XL, the socks accommodate different foot widths and lengths. Sizes 2XS and XS are specifically designed to fit children's feet, while the larger sizes serve women and girls with varying foot dimensions. The extensive sizing range—covering French shoe sizes 25 through 45 and corresponding US sizes—ensures proper fit across a broad spectrum of wearers.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric characteristic of traditional sock knitting. The pattern incorporates several essential knitting abbreviations and techniques:

  • Cast on (CO): The foundation method for creating initial stitches
  • Knit stitch (k): The basic forward stitch forming the stockinette base
  • Purl stitch (p): The reverse stitch used to create texture variation
  • Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Purl two together (p2tog): A decrease worked in purl orientation
  • Knit into front and back (kfb): An increase creating a new stitch from a single stitch
  • Purl into front and back (pfb): An increase worked in purl
  • Make one (M1): A technique lifting the strand between two stitches and knitting it to create an invisible increase
  • Stitch markers (M and PM): Tools for tracking pattern sections and round divisions

These techniques combine to create a structured, well-fitted sock with strategic shaping for the foot and leg.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Je t'aime pattern requires 4-ply sock yarn, a lightweight yarn weight specifically engineered for sock construction. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 200 to 320 meters (220 to 350 yards) depending on which size category is being knitted. The pattern sample shown in the PDF is worked in (Vi)laines Chaussettes yarn in the colorway Scrumping from the orchard.

Circular needles measuring 2.5 mm (US size 1½) are required for this project. The smaller needle size is standard for sock knitting, creating the tight gauge necessary for durable, well-fitting socks. Two stitch markers are needed to track pattern repeats and round divisions during knitting.

Gauge and Sizing Information

The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches by 44 rows equal 10 cm (4 inches) when working in stockinette stitch. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished sock dimensions. The detailed sizing chart provides foot circumference measurements in both metric and imperial units, allowing knitters to select the appropriate size based on precise foot measurements rather than shoe size alone, though French and US shoe size equivalents are provided as reference points.
