Ivy Seamless Beret Style Beanie by Jennifer Lee

What is Being Made

The Ivy is a versatile seamless beret style beanie designed by Jennifer Lee. This knitted hat offers multiple styling options, allowing the wearer to adjust its appearance and fit. The beanie can be worn as a traditional beret, styled as a slouchy beanie for a relaxed look, or with the brim turned up to create a firmer, more structured fit. This adaptability makes it a practical accessory suitable for various occasions and personal style preferences.

Techniques and Construction

This pattern is worked seamlessly, meaning it is constructed in the round without requiring seaming at the end. The beanie is created using an easy block stitch, which provides visual interest while remaining accessible to knitters. The seamless construction method eliminates the need for finishing seams, resulting in a polished, professional appearance. Despite the intermediate difficulty rating, the straightforward stitch pattern makes this project manageable for knitters developing their skills.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch used in this pattern is the block stitch, which creates a textured, geometric pattern. The pattern also incorporates stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) as referenced in the tension gauge. These stitches work together to create the structured yet flexible fabric characteristic of this beret style beanie.

Sizing Options

The Ivy beanie is available in four sizes to accommodate different age groups and head sizes:

  • Age 2-5: 52 cm (20½ inches)
  • Age 6-10: 54 cm (21¼ inches)
  • Teen: 55 cm (21¾ inches)
  • Lady: 56 cm (22 inches)

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern requires one 100-gram ball of Creative Basics Esther 8ply yarn for all sizes, which provides approximately 220 meters of yardage. The 8ply weight (equivalent to DK weight in standard classifications) creates a fabric with excellent drape and structure suitable for a beret style hat. The pattern notes that yarn quantities may vary depending on individual knitting tension and yarn type, so knitters should monitor their yardage usage throughout the project.

Needles and Tools

The pattern offers flexibility in needle choice to accommodate different knitting preferences. Knitters may use either 3.25mm (UK 10, US 4) double-pointed needles or a 3.25mm (UK 10, US 4) circular needle measuring 40 centimeters (16 inches) for the initial cast-on and early rounds. As the project progresses and stitches are decreased, the pattern transitions to 4.00mm (UK 8, US 6) needles, available as either double-pointed needles or a 4.00mm circular needle (40 centimeters/16 inches long, optional). A wool needle is required for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.

Tension and Gauge

Achieving the correct tension is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) when working in stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles. Knitters should knit a tension swatch before beginning the project to ensure their finished beanie will fit as intended.

Skill Level

While the pattern carries an intermediate difficulty rating, it is described as easy to work. This makes it an excellent project for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to explore seamless construction and simple stitch patterns. The straightforward block stitch and clear sizing options provide confidence-building structure for developing knitters.
