Product Description

This is the pattern for the Irish Wedding Aran Afghan I created for my niece on her wedding day.

The finished blanket is approximately 60'' wide by 72'' long, plus an 8'' Triple Knot Fringe at each end. It is made up of 5 panels knitted separately and then seamed together. This is a very warm, cozy and cuddly afghan. The center of each panel is made up of Hugs and Kisses with symmetrical twists and cables on each side. The Hugs and Kisses make it the perfect wedding gift or for anyone that you just LOVE!

Included with the pattern are instructions for materials, knitting, cabling and fringe, as well as photographs.

Irish Wedding Aran Afghan by Sharondipity Designs

Project Overview

The Irish Wedding Aran Afghan is a beautiful knitted blanket and throw designed by Sharondipity Designs as a wedding gift. This intermediate-level knitting project combines traditional Aran cable techniques with modern construction methods, creating an elegant heirloom-quality afghan perfect for special occasions or everyday use.

What Is Being Made

This project creates a complete afghan blanket constructed from five separate knitted panels that are seamed together. The multi-panel construction allows crafters to work on manageable sections before assembling the finished throw. The resulting piece is a substantial, decorative blanket suitable for draping over furniture or gifting for weddings and special celebrations.

Construction Technique

The afghan is built using a panel-by-panel approach, with each of the five panels knitted individually before being joined together. This modular construction method makes the project more portable and easier to manage than knitting a single large piece. The pattern repeats over 16 rows, creating consistent texture and visual interest throughout each panel. Crafters cast on 66 stitches and work through the 16-row repeat pattern multiple times to achieve the desired panel length before moving to the next section.

Stitches and Techniques Used

This project features authentic Aran knitting techniques, which are characterized by raised cable and texture stitches that create dimensional patterns. The cable work requires the use of a cable needle to manipulate stitches and create the signature twisted rope effects. The 16-row repeat pattern incorporates various cable configurations and textured stitches typical of traditional Irish Aran sweater design, adapted for afghan construction. Seaming techniques are employed to join the five panels together using a blunt darning needle, and fringe detailing is added using a crochet hook for a finished edge.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: 11 skeins of worsted weight acrylic Aran yarn (Medium 4 weight). Each skein provides 364 yards and weighs 7 ounces, offering excellent yardage for this substantial project.
  • Needles and Tools: 5.5 mm (US 9) knitting needles for the main fabric, a cable needle for executing cable stitches, a blunt darning needle for seaming panels together, and a crochet hook for adding fringe trim.

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable work and multi-piece construction. The cable techniques and panel assembly require attention to detail and previous experience with basic knitting stitches, but the 16-row repeat pattern becomes rhythmic and manageable with practice.

Gauge and Finishing

The pattern notes that gauge is not critical for this project, though the specified yarn and 5.5 mm needle combination will produce 12-inch panels. This flexibility makes the afghan forgiving for crafters whose tension varies slightly. The finished afghan is completed with crochet-hook fringe for a polished, traditional appearance.
